I ahve the brown version of the phone and when the backlight iluminates it makes the letter really hard to see. It is not like the black phone where the contrast between the black and white is noticable.

If you could turn off the backlight unless it was needed that would solve the problem.

I have the Bronze G1. I know what your talking about but after about a week of use I got used to it and familiar with where the keys fall. But to answer your question I've got no clue.

is there a way to turn off the backlight of the keyboard? I have a Bronze G1, and its actually easier to read the keys in certain lighting conditions when the backlight is off. This happens on my MacBook Pro also, so I normally just turn it off. I dont see a setting for this on the G1.

I actually want the opposite. I would like to make it stay on for 10 seconds or so

Do you have the bronze or black phone? The bronze is the one that needs the light off. If you have the black, its funny that that one needs the light on... :)

I'm writing this on a bromze g1 in a poorly lit living room (~3 15w cf bulbs) and cant see the keys for crap. it works great under fluorescent lights at work, i wonder if they ever tested it outside the office. anyway i would also love to be able to toggle the backlight myself.

I just put a small application in the Android Market that turns the keyboard backlight off. It doesn't even show anything on the screen, so it is easy to use by binding it to a keyboard shortcut with Settings->Applications->Quick launch.

The application is in the Market in Applications->Tools and it's called Dark Keys.

Thanks steffann. Would it be possible for you to post the code for that app?

Thank You, Steffann! You've heard the cries of the bronze and white G1 users and you've answered the call.

THANK YOU!!!

Installed the app and it is great for my bronze G1. My question for you though steffann is why not make an app which solves keyboard problems for everyone. Let people choose how long the backlight stays on also. When it is dark I would like to have the keyboard backlight on for more than a few seconds. If I had any clue how to program an app I would have made the applicaiton the 1st day I got the phone lol.

To my understanding it's rather simple.
It can turned on or off through /sys/class/leds/keyboard-backlight/brightness
Thanks for the app though, saves time.

Thanks Again Steffann for this little and helpful app. I like to post a comment to see if you can fix it; when typing in terminal seems that "Dark Keys" time out and backlight comes back on, I think it also happen when texting

I know the problem. I was going crazy on the bronze G1. Thanks god there is a new app. called: dark key. You can use this app to turn the back light on and off.
Actually this was working from fine. Since I received the last os upgrade, everythime I tried to use this app it locks up the phone and I can force close the app. The only way is to get it out of it is by taking the battery out. Is there anyother app out there that I can use

ahhhhhh.... just when I found an app to fix my problem so I didn't have to send back my phone (tmobile sent me bronze instead of black) I find out it is broken cause of the cupcake update :(
I have come in the last few days to like everything about the bronze other than the keyboard.. any news on this being fixed at all? and how soon?

Yea, it’s a bummer. The developer for DarkKeys is looking for help to get it working under cupcake. Hopefully some experienced programmers can help.
