I goto contacts and click on the contact I want to delete. Then I hit the menu and then 'delete contact'. However it doesn't delete. How in the heck do you delete a fricking contact?

Actually a bigger question might be... Can I just manage my contacts manually? I just want to manually add/delete them on my phone. I don't want to do any google sync or any sync at all. And just want to export them to a file for backup where I can re-import later if I lose them. Is that possible on droid?

For me, deleting a contact has always worked by long pressing the contact and selecting delete.
Yes they're many options in the market for backups. However your device must be rooted for the ones that I know of. But they allow you to save contacts to your sdcard or even store them online.

There should be apps that allow contacts backups without rooting. Contacts are accessible by the SDK, so it's not like there's any need for root.
Just turn off "Sync Contacts" in the phone's settings. Also long pressing a contact and selecting delete works for me...

My Backup Pro doesn't need root access and can back up your contacts.

Really? It asks me for root access whenever I reinstall it.

Don't confuse it supporting more features on rooted phones for it not being able to work on non-rooted phones.
My Backup Pro can backup everything on rooted phones, so it asks for root access if it's available. On non-rooted phones it can only backup apps, settings, contacts, SMS messages, and some other stuff.
I'm not rooted and it works fine for me.
Edit: MyBackup Pro will backup your paid apps if you're rooted, that's what it asks for root access for.

Oh I see! Thanks for the clarification my friend. I bought this app back when I had a rooted G1 and have rooted every device since then. I know no life without root!:o
