This worked for me on my Gentoo box. I'm now able to read/write to the SD card from Linux. But now the G1 cannot see any of my files. It's very interesting. I can see the files in both Windows and Linux through USB. But the phone can't see them. And even stranger - I used the Amazon store to buy a song and it downloaded fine and saved to the SD card. I can see the Amazon files when I use the Android file manager. But they are completely hidden on both Windows and Linux.

Try plugging it into a windows box with a memory card adapter and right click on the drive that comes up with the memory card then click format.

Yeah, just format via My computer when you connect the phone to the computer or via card reader.

Not sure how these previous post were interpreted, but after doing some hacking I noticed that with a new 4GB SD card I bought that when I unmounted it from the G1 settings windows doesn't see it. I then found that when I right click on the drive in My Computer and select eject the drive shows up and allows you to copy files over.

It appears that there is some code that could be added to communicate the state between a desktop and the G1 when it changes thereby update the respective device.

Hope this helps.

Hey folks, I am having a terrible time getting any...ANY SD card to work with my phone. I have no problem inserting it and using it to store photos and such that I take with the camera but here is the crazy part: I cannot drag and drop any files (music, pictures, .docs, etc.) from Windows onto it without getting the "...device I/O error issue." I am using USB 2.0 and when I try to format the cards through My Computer using FAT32 or NTFS, my computer immediately reboots! This happens with 3 1GB sd cards so far. This, will then render the card useless until I give it to the person who lent me the card. They then put it in their phone and re-format the card so that I can use it again (but of course only for storing photos taken with camera on phone). Freakin crazy. Had this phone for months and wondering if I will ever be able to put music on it. Any ideas?

Thanks

i) Get a micro SD adapter
ii) unmount your microSD card and take out of phone
iii) put your micro SD card into your adapter and put into your computer's card reader (if you have one)
iv) go to "my computer" and right click on the SD card
v) select "format"

I have sort of the same problem.
I have tried to format my MicroSD card but it says that there is no card, that I need to add a card.
What does that mean? What do i do?
I've fixed your post, no charge.

Also, I think your card could be screwed - Buy a new one.

Just connect you card to your desktop or laptop, then you can format the card on your computer.

First of all, you have to go run and type cmd there and press enter. Then you must type format j: where j is the Micro SD then follow the steps and this is done.
