Setup: (This setup is not required but is what I have running when it works)
I downloaded HTC sync 2.0.4 from
http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNew...31&news_id=222 (http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=631&news_id=222)
Install HTC sync
Backup the Driver folder from Program File>HTC>HTC Driver
Now Uninstall HTC Sync, You only want to keep the Drivers for MNS.
Now plug in your phone go to Settings>Wireless controls
Turn on Mobile network
Turn on MNS or Mobile Network Sharing
It will try to connect but fail instead leave it. Now on the Computer it should ask to install the Android phone drivers, in this case choose manual install and point it to the drivers in the folder you just backed up.
If it doesn't ask you to install simply go to hardware management and install it manually from there.
Also I am running vista 32bit on my laptop.
Method:
Now this method works by taking advantage of a race condition in the phone.
Essentially you want to get MNS to establish a connection to your computer BEFORE the mobile network can establish a connection with internet. (Hence where signal strength and lag play a key roll)
Make sure wifi is turned off, make sure you are plugged into the computer and have installed the MNS drivers, I have USB debugging enabled but i don't think that makes a difference.
Steps:
1. Turn off Mobile Network and MNS
2. Go to Mobile network settings
3. Select Mode of Operation switch to 1x-only
4. Go back one page
5. Turn on Mobile network
6. Quickly Turn on MNS also
7. If MNS connects before Mobile network you should be tethered now If not turn off Mobile network and MNS and repeat steps 5-6.
8. If successfully tethered go back to Mobile network settings and turn Mode of Operation back to Evdo or Hybrid.

Hey, nice tip there. I'm trying to confirm it here myself (haven't been successful yet, but I'll keep trying it out). I'm using Windows XP Pro 32-bit, and I'll test it out on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit eventually.
I've posted a reference to this thread on http://www.germreviews.com/200910253/workaround-tether-htc-hero-sprint , PM me if you'd like it referenced differently.
I keep getting,
"Error Code 67 .Registration failure. Press [OK] for Options. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again."
I'm assuming this is just what happens when the MNS isn't activated before the 1x data connection.

Yup you will get error 67 if Mobile network connects before MNS. If you are having trouble try moving locations or find anywhere that connection is slower.
My girlfriend was able to do it on her first try and someone in another forum also posted that he got it to work so I know it's not just my phone :D

Here I have an easier work around now for you. I still couldn't get it to work by enabling the MNS fast enough btw.
Here's what I did do though, I activated MNS, got the error code, and then launched the app "Device Self Service". The program forces a data connection so you can activate a phone or update software.
Tethering enabled :). Just keep the application open (don't go to the home screen) while you're working. I'm posting this from a tethered laptop right now.
[UPDATE]
Bah forget it, the connection seems like it was firewalled about 30 seconds after I had it. I could ping sites, but I was only able to access http roots, and I'd get 404's if I tried to visit specific pages. Seemed like I could check my e-mail though.
The problem I seem to be having is that my phone will activate the MNS before the Mobile Network. Mobile Network says, "Turning on mobile network". Then "Standby for connecting to mobile network" Then it seems like it switches off again and then goes back to, "Turning on mobile network". It just keeps doing that and eventually I get my error code after about a minute.
[UPDATE 2]
Looks like I finally got your method to work, I guess I'm just a little unlucky and it took a bazillion attempts haha.

I registered on this site just to say thanks for this Insanefury, I tried it on my Sprint Hero and it works great. Nice to know there is a work around with out resorting to rooting.

It works! No rooting or hacking! Just some patience and proper timing. The transfer speed is slow, slow, slow, but it's unlimited data, And I connected from Ubuntu 9.04! Thanks, Insanefury!

Works great, thank you very much. One thing I found helped me was to select "Safely Remove Hardware" before trying to connect.

Again, thank you Insanefury from the bottom of my heart. I have been trying all kinds of crazy things to get this network sharing to work and I was convinced that my cellular carrier had snuck in a program to keep me from doing it.
The point about not being connected to the internet, changing to 1x, and then connecting the mobile net and the mobile net sharing at the same time is crucial. I can't get it to work any other way but I'm delighted that it does!

Hi. Thanks for the post! I got it to work but I can only get a local connection. Can you advise me on how to get a full connection? 'Preciate it!

Just got it to work for the first time. Timing seems to be the key. I set it up in 1x then switched to hybrid once tethered. Just downloaded Firefox onto a new laptop at speeds in the mid 150kb/s range. Very exciting! THANK YOU!!!

One more piece of advice already mentioned but worth re mentioning is one tethered and in hybrid mode it takes my computer about 5 minuted to get internet in addition to local access... So there is a patience step at the very end. It works!!

I would first like to applaud insanefury for taking the time to figure out how to tether a HTC hero.
Secondly, The hero is runnning the same software as the Android. The tethering process is much easier if you download PDA net to your handheld and then use the tether service for the droid thru JuneFabrics. its a free trial and the licence fee is like 20 bucks(one time only) at that point your tether is fast, easy and it has some other cool features you can use. The biggest factor about this is you dont have to go thru all that other stuff and get the right "timing" or any of it.
Happy surfing droid community.

Thanks a lot for these steps, Insanefury. I got mine to work, finally. Some findings:
Initially, when I turned on Mobile Network Sharing on my Spring HTC Hero, I got:
"Data Call Failure
Drror Code 67. Registration failure. Press [OK] for Options. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again."
In addition, the status in "Mobile network" would not change to "Connected", but instead got stuck on "Connecting...", something or other.
I'm not entirely sure, whether these steps specifically fixed the error, but at least the two times I followed them, I was able to avoid the message. To recap:
With the device connected to your computer through USB (in my case Windows 7 w/HTC Sync 2.0.35 installed), set the following on your device:
- Settings > Wireless controls > turn off Mobile network
- Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile network settings > Mode of operation > 1X-Only
- Settings > Wireless controls > turn on Mobile network & quickly turn on Mobile network sharing.
- Wait until Mobile network becomes Connected.
- Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile network settings > Mode of operation > Hybrid
At this point, I thought I saw a message in my Windows task bar to the effect of "NDIS device detected."
Windows 7 should detect the connection and create a "Local Area Connection". If you look under "Network & Sharing Center > Local Area Connection > Properties, it should say "Connect using: HTC Remote NDIS based Device".
If you're in the Bay Area on Sprint, this should work for you too.
Cheers!

Aussie, upgrade to what? New firmware? 2.1 OS?
Currently, I'm on firmware 1.5 & Software version 1.56.561.2. I was planning to update them, but I might not, if that would disable my device as a USB modem.
Thx.

I agree with aussie
Tethering with my HTC Hero on O2 network in the UK does not work anymore after upgrading to android 2.1.
I dont know why. It used to tether with no problems, just enabling the share mobile network tab. I never had to do the complicated steps above at all. Windows Vista used to find the connection and set it up straight away.
I've tried on my desktop running Vista ultimate and on my laptop running Windows 7 ultimate.
Any suggestions welcome as I'm stuck.

Need a little help...
Last night I got this to work first try, tonight I have tried for about an hour unsuccessfully.
I think its more of a challenge because I dont have any option to select the 1x mode of operation. Does anyone have any tips on slowing down the time it takes my phone to connect to sprint?
