I'd like to record video with an external microphone to get better sound quality, e.g. the one with the headset you get when buying the G1. However, it seems like I get no sound. Is this not supported? Is there a videorecorder app other than the built in that supports this? Or a voice recorder app (although I'd really want a video app).

... exactly what I am looking for! except I would like an adapter to transform the mini usb-port the G1 has, into a stereo 'line-in' port. so I can record (and stream) external audio while I record (and stream) video. I found the "HTC Multifunction Audio Cable YC-A300" but i'm not sure it will do the things i expect.

Anybody an idea?

Well, the hardware is there. It might already be able to do it. Check if when you plug in a headset the phone records from the internal mic or the external one.

If you want to record video with external mircophone, you should use some screen recorder to help you. It can help you capture whatever on your computer screen, and it also support to record with your speaker or microphone. I always use it to record msn webcam (http://www.screenrecord.net/record-msn-webcam.html)when I was making video calls on msn with my friends. And they said my video is cool.

I believe I have found a solution of sorts. I have a dell streak that allows you to plug the handsfree with microphone. If you are recording video and you press the button on the handsfree the mic will work, BUT, it also opens up google listen and records whatever podcast is playing as well. The next step is to go into the sound settings and turn the media volume all the way down, this will prevent the podcast from being recorded, but the mic will still be recorded which is what you want. Then go back into the camcorder, hit record, hit record on your hands free, and the microphone should work.

So I guess you have to have google listen for this to work, but but another media application may work to, I'm not sure.
Also I only know that this works on the Dell Streak ( Android version 2.2) don't know about other phones / versions.

You could custom wire a microphone cable for the 4 connector 3.5mm plug but you would have to make sure to have a switch to mimic the microphone button. I've never seen a wiring diagram for the plug, but if you know how to solder and can find an extra 3.5mm 4 port jack to use it shouldn't be to hard.

Hope this helps

If you need a adapter for the phone, then check what i did here in this thread:

There are also link to a app which can record video with the external microphone :)
