ccording to WCBS, 15-year-old Alexa Longueira was walking in Staten Island, New York last week, texting on her phone
(http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/18457.cfm#)when she fell into an open manhole, recieving minor injuries.
She also lost a shoe in the sewage. Speaking of the incident Alexa says her fall was "really gross... shocking and scary."
Now obviously, the accident was not entirely the girl's fault. There were no warning signs around the unattended manhole. A nearby Department of Environmental Protection worker pulled her out and continued his job of flushing the sewer after. The Department then issued an apology for the lack of orange cones or warning signs.
Despite the lack of warning signs however, many observers almost completely blame Longueira for not seeing an open manhole and being completely detached from her surroundings.
The problem of texting has been in the news of late especially in regards to driving, where a string of accidents have been attributed to distracted drivers (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/desktop_software/other_tools/drivers.cfm) texting while behind the wheel.

The best part about this story and the video accounts found around the web is "The workcrew left the cover off while they went to get cones to warn of the cover being off"
She better be texting her BFF Jill.

She better be texting her BFF Jill.
Haha good one.
Honestly I couldn't help but laugh when I read this story, and I'm sorry but it is her fault, even if the cones or signs were there, if she was stupid enough to walk into a manhole, she probably wouldn't have seen the signs either.

twitter and water don't mixl (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/22/twitter-death-romanian-te_n_219032.html)
A Romanian teenager was electrocuted to death in her bathtub while using the social networking site Twitter, the Croatian Times reports. Maria Barbu, 17, is believed by police to have lost too much battery power while using her laptop computer during an extended bath and was electrocuted when she tried to plug it back in to the wall socket, according to the Times report. Further details of the incident are unknown. Barbu was discovered later by her parents.

Idk if you aren't aware that you're sole focus on something is so intense and you don't realize anything else around you, you pretty much deserve to fall into a poop hole. I can handle texting and driving on a normal scale, I don't do it cause I don't have any intentions on crashing ever and its just common sense. Its like people listening to Ipods and getting ran over. 1 its dumb. 2. you deserve it.
Learn how to enjoy life and whats around you or hate it and be defensive and not by into the media that says live life to your soundtrack. haha

I'm still waiting for the next logical step, which is integrating voice recognition into a messaging client.

text and walk (http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/iphone-apps/lifestyle/phase2-media-email-n-walk-615047/review?src=rss&attr=all)
In order to avoid walking into people and vehicles when emailing while walking, we have this little app, Email 'n Walk.
Fire it up and you're presented with a live video feed from the rear-mounted camera, with white text displayed over a translucent black background – and you can enter a subject line and the body; when you hit Send, it passes your text to the Mail application for addressing.

lolol, my thoughts precisely!
now, i want to know, what happened to her phone? hilarious if she had the consciousness to keep a grip on her prized possession while POSSIBLY falling to her death (not in the case obviously)...

Wouldn't this mean direct contact with the person you're trying to contact? Eww.

lolol, thats how i feel sometimes with people i communicate with primarily by text, like they'd be offended, or its overkill to actually call them...
