So I have an iPhone and I'm on AT&T. What's the easiest way for me to get an unlocked G1 for use with my current carrier? I was looking at purchasing one from Amazon, but it ships from WorldWide Distributors is this a reputable dealer? Will I just be able to slap my sim card in the G1 and be ready to go?

Sorry if this has been answered before, I've read a lot into it and seem to be getting conflicting information. Thanks in advance!

Or get an ADP1 straight from Google and show off that nifty back cover to all your friends who will then know you're awesomer (totally a word) than they are.

With unlocked phones you can pop in your sim and go, but you'll go at 2G (Edge) speed only. Problem is that AT&T's 3G network is incompatible with T-Mobile and most of the rest of the world.

3G data service frequencies break down like this (I think, don't hold me to this):

850MHz and 1900MHz - North America, for 2G networks where voice and data are interchangeable. Which is why you can't answer the phone while using 2G (Edge) data service.
850MHz - some 3G data networks, mostly Rogers in Canada.
1900MHz -AT&T's 3G data network, but AT&T also uses 850MHz in limited areas.
1700MHz - T-Mobile's U.S. 3G data network, but T-Mo U.S. also owns 2100MHz bandwidth.
900 MHz and 2100MHz - 3G data networks for most providers in Europe and Asia, some other places.

T-Mobile's U.S. compatible phones like the G1 or MyTouch come equipped to use either 2100mhz or 1700mhz. However, so far T-Mo has only used 1700mhz in the U.S. I can' t say for sure that a T-Mo U.S. 1700/2100MHz phone would work on 2100MHz 3G used in much of the rest of the world...maybe. Buy me a round-trip ticket to Amsterdam and I'll let ya know.

So in a nutshell, as you can see from above, to use 3G data service ya gotta be sure you get phone setup for the correct 3G frequencies. 3G service has thrown a big monkey wrench into swapping around smartphones on networks and buying unlocked smartphones.

Don't ask me about Veri$on or friggin' Sprint's 3G. I don't know and don't care.

I actually just did this. I had an iPhone and traded it to a guy on craig's list for a G1 and $100.

Yes you can't use the G1 at 3g speeds on AT&T but honestly AT&T edge is faster than Tmobile edge so it really doesn't make to much of a difference. Also 3g kills your battery life and for the speed it gives you it really isn't worth it.

It is?

...so it really doesn't make to much of a difference. Also 3g kills your battery life and for the speed it gives you it really isn't worth it.Well, on mine 3G is usually 4-5 times faster than 2G/Edge. No doubt 3G uses more power on a per second of use basis. But since the phone spends far fewer seconds grinding away trying to load a webpage, I'd bet less power is used on a per webpage basis, so to speak. So using 3G there may be a net gain in useability per charge over 2G. Be an interesting test at least.

Also a reduction in the frustration factor from wating for webpages and email to load. And don't forget, the upload speed is much better, too. For me 3G is well worth it.

Yeah, my friend has a G1 on Tmobile and edge speeds on my G1 running on AT&T are definitely faster than edge speeds on Tmobile.

I realize 3g is much faster but for me personally it doesn't make a difference at all. The kind of stuff I use the data for on my phone rarely calls for anything more than Edge and most of the time I'm at school, home, or work and wifi is available. These are just my personal preferences. Others who may use their phone for a lot of browsing my differ in opinion.

It could be just me but I thought the trade off was well worth getting a phone running android.

I can vouch for it, i was on T-Mo for the longest, had my G1 since it first came out, recently i switched to ATT and their EDGE speeds are much faster than T-Mo's, in a nutshell i miss 3G at times but their EDGE speed makes it harder for me to miss T-Mo's 3G. (Only when im on a call i wanna go online or using super data heavy apps :p)

Yes, you buy it straight from Google. After becoming a "registered" Android developer ($25) you have the option of purchasing one for $399.

For what it's worth I think the ADP1 has a better build quality than the G1.
