Gmail Inbox Issue

Not sure if anyone else has the problem, but I hope someone does, along with a solution. Most of the time whenever I press the Gmail icon on my home view or the Gmail notification from my notification dropdown bar, Gmail will open in a random message that I read awhile ago. Is there any way to make Gmail always open in the Inbox view as a default?

If you back out of gmail from the inbox, instead of pressing the home button from viewing an email, it should open to the inbox when you launch it again.
