I first posted this in December, but 6 months later it still happens when I do a factory reset - about 1x/every 2 months to retrieve storage on it.
"I just checked my contacts (on my G1) for the first time in several days and found that they had all been replaced by my nephew's 5 My Faves contacts. He's using my old Dash with my old sim card, but should not have been able to affect my gmail account in any way as the G1 is using a new sim card and doesn't "talk" to the Dash. He claims to have used the wifi browser on the dash to access his gmail, but not mine - he doesn't have my password.
I called T-Mobile customer support and they have no idea how this could have happened - they could only suggest contacting google and trying to get my contacts rolled back 3 days, when I know I was good."
Update to above: He DID use his own sim card, so that isn't the problem.
As was suggested, I now use MyBackup (paid version) and it works like a charm to restore everything, but I've confused the heck out of T Mobile by complaining about this because I was getting a warning about "too many contacts deleted" when I restored my phone, not realizing that was because the phone was also picking up my nephew's 30 or so contacts and MyBackup would delete them and replace with mine.
I'm posting this again because I did a factory reset today (6 am) and the MyBackup app said something about not backing up contacts as that would mess up gmail. For the first time I didn't and next thing I knew my contacts (about 80) were gone, replaced with my nephew's 25 contacts, both on the phone and on gmail. I was able to restore my contacts with MyBackup, but they're still not synced to gmail - definite problem there.
Any idea what could cause this? The two phones are only connected in that I've owned both and we're on the same family plan, but Dash and G1 don't even "speak the same language", as one's a Windows mobile device and the G1 is on the Android platform.
It's pretty much a nuisance and a curiousity at this point, as I have my contacts backed up 5 places now, but it concerns me that this still happens.
