Severely disappointing - Why put a 3mp piece of crap on the phone? To sell more units? What good is it? Will that even really be able to support the barcode scanning pricing app?
I do use cell phone cameras, and I was really excited to be moving up to 3mp... Those pics scare me, hope they're flukes, with antiquated software somehow taken by a phone covered in pocket goo and geek slobber, so that the camera on this phone will at least be worth being there.

The pictures look bad because they are out of focus. Any camera in low light situations like this will have to slow the shutter speed down in order to actually get a decent exposure. I'm sure if he went outside on a nice day or was somewhere other than a bathroom (guessing by the tile), some place that had nice lighting they would look a lot better.

Exactly! My 8 MP camera like most looks bad in low lighting conditions unless you have a tripod or mount.

agreed. I only use my camera as a phone if I happen to see something funny and no one is around to see it as well -- so I document it to get a laugh later with someone else.
If I want great pics, I'll use my camera. If I want a blurry/funny pic that gets the point across, I'll use my G1

As a photographer, I'll tell you, the key to good photos is lighting. There is only so much you can do with low lighting. Especially if you're not using a tripod. Indoor pics come out like that on my 5mp and 8mp cameras if there's not enough good light. Flourescent lighting doesn't work well with a camera, unless your camera has a setting for that kind of condition. That's why back in the day you could take a picture with all the lights in the house on, everyone holding a flashlight and it would still come out too dark. Without adequate light, the shutter moves slower, and when it moves slower, tiny movements, even the beating of your heart can move the camera enough to cause blurring. Like most cameraphones, I don't think the G1 has a flash, which can help in low-light conditions.
I want someone to take pictures outside in the sun, then you'll see what this baby can do. Crappy cameras take crappy photos even in bright sunlight.

It's all about the flash I'm using a Sony Ericsson K790a and it has a 3.2 MP camera on it and they look just like that without the flash on. So it looks good to me. I just wish it did have a flash but oh well I don't want it for the camera.

I'm guessing that a flash would drain the battery real quick and might take forever to charge up in between pictures.

I have the HTC 8925, with a 3MP camera, and it takes amazing pictures, the big thing is you have to hold the camera perfectly still, and your subject cant move either lol, but if the criteria is met, i belive the G1 will match the quality of this phone (also has auto-focus)

I pray that the G1 uses a battery like the one in my K790a or a better one. My phone seldom needs recharging and I talk and shoot pics and messages all the time. I have a 21 month old baby girl that I'm always taking pics of and whose always playing with my phone taking pics. The flash has that pre-orange lite that comes on when you ready a pic and it's pretty bright I've actually used it like a flash light for things and it doesn't seem to effect my battery.
I'm rambling now sorry I'm going to shut up now.

As others have said a few times, it's mostly due to the lighting. You can either have a more-focused, but dark picture, or a bright, less-focused picture.
I'm honestly very satisfied with how those pictures look under the conditions. Much better than the 2mp on my HTC Herald. Also, I bet firmware upgrades will improve quality in the future.
Definitely good for a camera phone.

Maybe that's why I'm so critical of the pictures. I think they are terrible. Grainy, out of focus, and poor white balance. But it's not what I bought the phone for, so I'm cool with it.

You do know that MP has only to do with the size of the picture not quality right? the only difference is that if you have a large MP Photo and shrink it down the resolution will be better. so if you took those pics and shrunk them a little they would look pretty good. great pics for a phone shot indoors with low light. I cant wait till 22nd.
jdwme
10-08-2008, 06:15 PM
Oh I know that, if your comment was directed at me. That's why I know with a 4mp dslr I can get a better photo than a 10mp p&s camera. I've shot cameras ranging from 4mp up to 21mp but still enjoy film and would love it if we could have a g1 with a medium format film camera instead of the 3mp camera
So is there any info out there on the sensor for the camera on the g1?

The person who posted the pictures said there was a shutter speed app that allows for control on aperture, so perhaps they can improve on the pictures. But if you have used any cell phone cameras this is basically the quality you will get. Some are better, but those tend to be the ones that advertise the camera prominently. Without a flash and in low light, pretty much the quality is expected not to be that good.
From what was seen in the demo the camera app in the G1 is very basic, there will probably be apps that will give you better options for the camera.

won't expect much out of a cellphone image sensor.
it gets the job done when you don't really care about image quality.
if image quality matters that much to you, you shouldn't be using a cellphone to take photos in the first place.
if the MP number means that much to you, I can help you blow them up to 25MP images for free.

You might have missed what was commented on in an early post, but the reason for the blurry picture is due to the fact that the lighting was bad.
With pretty much any camera of any kind, if the lighting is not good then the picture will also be no good unless using a tripod or mount to hold the camera completely still.
jdwme
10-09-2008, 02:16 PM
10mp or 8mp don't mean anything if they are still using the same tiny crap image sensor.
But with some of the new camera phones they have a larger sensor then current camera phones. I don't think anyone expects them to shove a full frame sensor into a phone, but the new moto and even a new lg from what I've seen are good replacements for people who carry a point and shoot camera.

here's some pics i took with my tytn,2mp camera. these were taken outside today on a partly cloudy day. i think they look good for a camera phone. don't forget, they're compressed even more after uploading. the g1 has a 3mp cam and auto focus. i'm sure they'll look even better. i always considered camera phones to be a novelty. like for those funny moments or sudden double rainbows, etc. they are nice to have, but i never expected or do i expect a camera phone to equal a standalone digital cam. that's simply asking too much, for right now at least. who knows what they'll do in 5 years or so though.

Looks like low light and the operator didn't give the camera time to auto focus. MY SK-LX sometimes takes crappy pics if I snap them too fast, but if I give it time to focus and filter in/out light it takes awesome pics, so I am not worried. Plus incadescent (sp) or flourescent (Sp) light is tough to take pics in with the best of camera phones.
