There are least a half dozen bird watching/identification apps for the iPhone (e.g., http://www.ibird.com/) and I can't believe nobody has done one yet for Android.

I'm ready to pay for an app that has images of birds, audio of bird calls, searchable database and ability to "tag" birds that I've spotted.

Anybody ready to take my money?

I agree! I suspect there are a lot of people out there waiting for the same thing! Have you contacted the iBird folks?

I have not contacted the iBird folks, but did find this interesting post when I googled iBird and Android:

You're not the only one! I would definitely be happy to shell out $$ for a birding app. Its such a pain to lug around books and/or a laptop when birding. I, too, was stunned that someone hadn't already ported ibird over to android by now.

Hell, Cornell Ornithology's site is great - if they'd port that out they could make extra $$ for their dept. :)

I just keep hoping someone smarter than me is listening out there and wants my money.

Um, people who go birdwatching. Is that ok with you, or would you like to muck up their thread some more?

From what I am hearing, there are obstacles with the app development as with any new technology. As for Android development, the main concern is memory management and a "Force Close" error. This is not deterring developers from eventually releasing apps, but it is putting a delay on them. I for one am sticking with my cell provider and waiting for Motorola's fabled Mirage/Shadow to be released. In the meantime, I am really enjoying Audubon Guides' Bird app (http://www.audubonguides.com) for my iPod Touch.

The application has born and is named "blueBill Mobile"; it's free, open source and available in the Market. The website is here:

http://bluebill.tidalwave.it/mobile/

It initially focuses on recording observations with the help of the GPS and contains a list of birds for the Western Palearctic, in multiple european languages.

I'm working for adding media capabilities, both photo and sounds. If you live in a different world area than the Western Palearctic, please contact me so I can add the required data.

It has been just released and might have infancy defects. It doesn't cost anything to you: please provide feedback and have it improved and have a little patience if initially doesn't do exactly what you need.

Recently Mydigitalearth made an Android version of "Sibley birds of North America". Check out their website at http://www.mydigitalearth.com/
As you can see, several other nature guides, mainly for southern Africa, will also be available shortly for the Android platform.
