3 how do you close applications ? I have just been using the home button
4 can it be configured to auto maticly use my wifi at home and then when out of range switch to 3g?(and idealy my mates wifi when round his)
5 any must have applications?
6 any tips for a g1 noob?
7 can I use normaljava apps too or symbian?

before you do ANYTHING , even searching this site , look through the handbook that came with the phone . i believe most of your answers are there

1.) http://rivviepop.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/g1sdcard.jpg?w=533&h=355

2.) Yes, but I believe it requires an App or a mod.(called rooting.)

3.) When you use the home button, it doesn't close it. It just 'minimizes' out of it. To close it, there is an app for that called advanced task manager.

4.) If you connect to your wifi at home. The g1 will remember it and you can set it to connect to it whenever it's in range. I believe it's the default setting so you won't have to change anything after you connect to it. As far as the 3g thing goes...I don't live in a 3g area so I automatically have 3g disabled. It saves battery, and the edge system is relatively fast, and the wifi(wherever I go I usually have access to a wifi network) is even better.

5.)Task Manager, Shopsavvy, flashlight are the only real ones I have. I have Ak47, and a few other games. Funny Jokes...that's about it. It's up to your personal preference.

6.) Yes, fiddle with your phone, it's a very flexible phone that has more options than ANY other phone I've every used...(I haven't used the iPhone btw.) Read some reviews, Phonedog does app reviews pretty regularly. youtube a guy named "CoolPstuts". He'll teach you quite a bit.

7.) Not really sure..

Hope I helped, and enjoy your G1!

Here is something else you can play with, a G1 emulator.

Rooting isn't an app, it's something you do. Like I said, CoolPstuts will explain what it is/how to do it. However, I would recommend playing with your phone for a while.

Welcome to the fam mrgreaper.

2 can I move installed apps to the memory card or will I have to redownload?(after 3 apps I only have 60 megs free on the phone but 7 gigs left on the memory card)

Yes, but you will have to gain root access to your phone.

*Before you go rooting your phone, please do what I did. Go through and read all of the sticky threads in each of the catagories here at AC. It is alot of reading but it will explain alot of stuff (Usually you'll get the jist of the thread before you have to read it all anyway). Not just how to but why and what happens if I mess something up. It's cool stuff if you're into programming and coding or just curious. Actually most of the stuff the average person was wanting to gain root access for has been added with "Cupcake", the new OS update so you may not need to do it. But like I said, If you're a tech kinda guy you may still do it.*

4 can it be configured to auto maticly use my wifi at home and then when out of range switch to 3g?(and idealy my mates wifi when round his)

As long as you have your wi-fi and notifications turned on the phone will let you know when it's picking up a wi-fi signal. And when it's not it will work on 3G/2G. Or when you don't choose to (or can't) access the wi-fi singal.

5 any must have applications?

Advanced task Manager (as mentioned before)
Astro (or a different) File Manager
If you don't use Gmail I suggest K-9 Mail. The default app is ok but buggy (IMO)
Pacman! (nuff said)

6 any tips for a g1 noob?

Play with it! (read my sig)

You have to touch it. Find out what touch makes it do what.

Another forum to check out is XDA.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/

It deals alot more with development so it's a little more technical. But it's full of great info.

Have fun.

ok i read a lot of stickies then lots of (some admitadly old) threads tutorials etc on rooting (seems to be my only option to allow installation of apps to the memory card)
ok first up my curent version according to my phone is

model number
T-mobile G!

firmware version
1.5

baseband version
62.50s.20.17u_2.22.19.26i (where do they get such snazy names!)

kernal version
2.6.27-00393-g6607056
san@sandriod #1

buildnumber
crb43

a lot of the guides i looked at said "US phones only" or "written for us phones" which is annoying cos there the ones i could almost make sense of but i have a uk phone

all the warnings off bricking your phone scare the hell out of me but having only 35 megs of application space left when you have a 8 gig mmc in it is frustrating

now the first thing i did was look in app store for cupcake and found cup cake lite ....its a chat room programme so i then we did some searchs and found those tutorials but heres the kicker i have "some" of the features of cupcake for example i have the on screen keyboard with the sound and vibrate mentioned in a video of cupcake i saw but i dont have search by voice or multi touch so im guessing t-mobile took some stuff out (though for what reason is beyond me)

what i need is a upto date idiots guide to changing a g1 from t-mobiles stock os to something that allows installation of apps to the mmc with little to no risk (yeah i dont ask for much lol)

Check out androidandme.com . They have an "idiots" guide to rooting . It seems scarier than it seems . About phone memory ....... I have not moved my apps to sd . I have 102 apps installed with 22mb still left . A lot of your memory goes to caches . Like for the browser for example . I moved my caches to my sd card using a free app for rooted phones that is available in the market . If I need to , I would move my apps to sd . But I haven't found the need . I have. Been using the phone for 7 months now . I have heard and read about issues with the apps on the sd card , so I am holding off until it is nessessary .
Ps. The phone , by itself , also clears its caches when it start running out of memory .

before i retired to the land of slumber i checked out the link you provided and there tutorial is one i came across earlier but sadly it states ;

This guide is intended for US phones. If you are in a country other than the United States, please visit the xda-developers forums for more information on rooting your Android device.

which is a real shame as its the best one i have read tonight (and by god i have read a lot)

right since my projector and lights keep turning off every few seconds (either that or my eyes keep closing) im off to bed

after you root it doesnt matter if you have a uk phone . for example , jf has out the 1.5 os version (cupcake) , rooted for the us , uk , and adp phone . you can put on any of them you like (i recommend the adp version) . if one day you want to be us , you can . then the day after you could use the adp version , and then back to the uk version . there are slight differences in os , but the phones are the same . you could use a us guide to root . its all the same process . you will just get a us version . but you would be able to change it with ease later . enjoy . btw , dont get to attached to google , they will end up running your life !!! ( from my own experiance ) :)
