View Full Version : WiFi Issue with HTC Magic

Hi All,
Having just received my HTC Magic, I was keen to get it connected to the internet. To do this while I'm waiting for my SIM card to be activated, I thought I'd try WiFi.
But even though it could detect my wireless network, it's attempt to get an IP address is "Unsuccessful". My router is a 2Wire one, and was wondering if this was the issue, as suspected here (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/trouble-accessing-wi-fi-14099/) for a similar problem with the G1.
When I try setting a static IP address as described in that thread, it claims to get connected, but none of the apps seem to agree (ie. they complain of no connection).
Is anyone else having problems connecting their HTC Magic to a wireless network? It's nothing to do with my SIM not being activated yet, is it?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Andy

Sorry, I can't help with andyjc's question as I don't have a Magic and never tried connecting without a activated SIM, but...

No offense, but IMPO 2wire stuff kinda sucks, but still I've connected both my Linux laptop and G1 to 3 or 4 different 2wire routers. Something must be wrong with your setup. Have you tried changing between WEP and WPA? Static or DHCP IP?

Initially I tried WEP, and when that didn't work I removed encryption altogether. No joy there either.
Yes, I've tried both a static IP address - as described by extorian in that other thread - and DHCP, which I assume is default when not setting a static IP.
With the static-IP option, the phone 'connects', but no apps recognise the connection. With DHCP, it fails to get an IP address from the router.
My strategy is to try it with other wireless routers (e.g. at work), but I'd be keen to know if anyone has connected an HTC Magic to any wireless network?

I have a Buffallo-n for virgin. and same challenges.
tried it on a d-link dir-635, and worked a treat, have ordered one and hope that should do the trick, will let know.
Great idea for everyone submitting their routers

I have a ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A Wireless router. I have tried all combinations of security, even NO SECURITY WHATSOEVER, and still the device won't transfer data.
Not working;
Firmware: 1.5, Build: CR817
Wifi Router: ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A
Security: Tried All; WPA2, WPA, WEP & None.
Problem: Connect under all conditions but no data is sent
Please help.

If your router allows you to MAC filter a device, you may want to open your G1's MAC to allow all activity. There are also router with "game modes" where you can sometimes set a troublesome device as "host" to allow traffic through.
More than likely, it's a configuration within your router. I would shift the focus away from G1 and onto Google searching for general device/connection issues with your specific router. I think that's your best bet for finding a working solution.

The MAC address of the device has already been entered into the Allowed list.
I don't really understand your point about the router... I've connected effortlessly to the same WiFi network with my HTC Touch Diamond.

Could it be the G1? Absolutely! But I'm still betting it's router configuration.
I have "effortlessly" connected hundreds of devices to literally dozens of routers in my life. And in all cases, except for one, when I swore up and down the culprit was with the device I was attempting to connect to the router I have wound up being wrong.
But that's alright; best of luck. I hope you get it squared away.

Okay, router configuration. Could you be more specific? My router has no "game mode"...

No, I can't be more specific. That's why I said to turn your search over to Google and searching for configuration options with your specific router. I was merely giving you a suggestion for an alternative "spot" to look rather than hoping to stumble upon a G1 user who has encountered and fixed the issue.
While someone here may, in time, come to your aid -- I simply thought your time might be put to a more valuable use searching for information regarding your router than waiting here with fingers crossed.

I've noticed under the router's WLAN client list that the device does not have a "Host Name". Would that present a problem?
It is assigned an IP address by the router without any problems, though.
Also the device seems to lose connection and reconnect constantly (every 5-10 seconds).
I done some digging around in the router settings and found an "AnyIP" feature. Would that possibly help?

I've found several cases of the same issue with HTC devices and routers.
Example:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/01694410-d2f2-408e-8e4d-8646ae436428
It seems that most of the people that have experienced this WiFi data transfer problem, have solved it by changed an advanced network setting to "Best Performance" - on Windows Mobile phones.
The problem with the G2 Android device is that there is no such setting. But it might be something for an Android developer to delve into - this could be it, since these same issues have been with HTC devices.

Ok, I'm going to have to punch a hole in the "2wire doesn't work with Android" theory, I connect my G1 to a 2wire router at work every day, its a Qwest wireless router. Is this just a Magic problem?

There are a number of issues floating around. Support for WPA2 seems iffy and some people can just change to WPA or WEP and all work fine.
There are however a number of people (such as me) who can get a connection perfectly, it shows connection OK, they get an IP from the DHCP server etc, they can even browse a page for a few seconds... but after that no data is sent and everything times out. This is happening on any security from none through to WPA2.
I have seen no solution to this anywhere and believe me I have looked. Some people have given up and got a new router, but this is not a solution.
Can someone confirm that this has been recognised as a fault with the magic and is being investigated, rather then assuming it's a user or router error. There are far too many instances of this across many brands of router for it not to be an issue with the HTC Magic.

Can't talk about general issues with the Magic, but our test unit connects to WiFi networks with no problems at all.

I'm going to have to punch a hole in the "2wire doesn't work with Android" theory...I already did that earlier in this thread. Claims that Android will not connect with 2wire devices (or any other brand) because it basically Linux are just not true. Linux does a great job with networking and Android should actually have fewer connection problems because it is basically Linux. For example, pop in most any 'live' Linux distro CD and watch as it automagically finds your LAN's static IPs or provider's IP and has you on the 'net with no effort from you, unlike a certain other OS.
But...wifi routers are another matter and sometimes a tough nut to crack. So many wireless router models, so many variations in firmware, so much crap out there. JaceMan is right, problems can almost always be traced to the router not the device trying to connect. I rarely use wifi but just as a test and from curiosity I've hooked up with with either my G1 or Linux laptop to maybe 15-20 different routers with no hassle, including 4 2wire devices I can think of. So from my experience I'd say rumors about 2wire and Linux devices can't be true.
Look at the router. If it seems to be right - look again. The G1/Magic is probably not where the problem is.

hi
same problem here with a brand new magic
I noticed one strange thing, may be it s not linked but i loose my wifi when the battery is half full/empty
and nothing change when the battery is almost empty,
but the weird thing is:it seems to work fine when the battery is full (at least one full hour)
I hope it helps
and i hope you get my english ( I m french) :o

Having now tried my work's router, and successfully connected, I'm quite confident that it's a router-specific issue. Both routers (home and work) are 2Wire, but different models. My works one is the newer, horizontal standing model (BT2700HGV, software version 5.29.107.19), whilst my home one is the older, vertical standing type (Intelligent Gateway 1800, s.v. 3.5.55)
At the end of the day, it seems that the later 2Wire model has some improvements which allow for the HTC Magic to connect.

I've got a G2
I've tried it on 3 different Linksys devices.
5 or 6 different speedtouch wireless routers, Buffalo's and 2wire devices.
I've even tried it on a few netgears and Sky/Talk Talk/Vodafone routers.
(I work for an ISP Testing company)
Anyhow I recommend resetting the phone to factory defaults.
Setting your router to WPA and picking something simple for the passcode (Nothing long say, 5 Characters in length)
and then setting up the connection again.
See how that plays out, It could be the phones storing old data and entering the wrong passcode over and over.

I have the same equipment as you, and I actuallied tried the same with security, also I tried changeing the channels on the router - nothing helped.
I used to have HTC Vox (winmo) and I had the same problems getting that one connected to the same router - untill I changed the wifi settings on the phone to "Best performance".

My nephew has the HTC Magic phone, in his house, he has a Netgear wireless router with Sky, he is able to connect to his netgear router successfully, as the router is set up with WPA security.
However, when he comes arount my place, I have a Linksys WRT160N router, set up with WPA2 security, the router gives the phone an IP address but the status of the phone remains offline & on the phone, my SSID always shows as Not in Range.
However, the phone picks up my neighbour's BT wireless router, which is either a WEP or WPA security but phone does not say that is not in range.
I can only assume then that the device has issues with WPA2 security at the moment ..... any thoughts on these observations ?

Probably same problem here.
I have a HTC magic and a Gigabyte GN-BR01G at firmware revision 1.38E.
Signal looks excellent.
I can get authenticated and assigned static ip (mac access control)
But I am unable to get any data transfer.
I have tried:
Authentication: Open, WEP 128 bit, WPA psk.
802.11g only, tried both on/off.
Toggle ssid: no effect.
Channel: Tried 1, 3, 11 -no good.
The unit has successfully connected and had data traffic on various open networks during the summer.
I have successfully connected many other units to the WiFi router in question, Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, laptops...
Is there still no resolution to this, it seems to affect many people?

Another data point: my HTC Magic AKA G2, in this case a dev phone from Google, works fine with an Apple Airport (time capsule version) but cannot DHCP from a Linksys WRT54G - connects OK, but no DHCP thus no address thus no use. My G1 (also google dev phone) is fine with both.

I have also been having trouble with data transfer over wifi on my G2. I have the Zyxel p2602hw-d1a which didn't work so i tried my old 802.11b dl-514 which doesn't work, so being all fired up to use my new shiny white toy, I ran out and bought a Netgear n2000 which also didn't work, although it did a bit better than the others only dropping around 13% of data packets as opposed to 90%.
Happily, a firmware update has got the Zyxel working! It can be downloaded (http://www.zyxel.com/web/support_download_detail.php?file=20051104155523200 5110415525820041105154230_20081209_V340%28ADQ.6%29 C0-340adq6c0.rar&model=P-2602HWL-D1A#) from their website. The file is called p2602hwl-d1a but it also applies to p2602hw-d1a.

Owner of an HTC Magic, I also have problem connecting to most routers. I have a new D-Link router at home and connection works great.
However, I am not able to connect to any other Wifi network.
Trying to connect to unprotected network always succeed from the point of view of the phone settings, I probably receive an IP, however, none of the application are able to receive data. There is no (Mac/IP) filtering on those network, colleagues with Iphone are perfectly able to connect and browse. I've tried with MANY unprotected network and results is always the same, I believe a problem exist on HTC Magic's side.
Is there a way to get some sort of updates?

This is so frustrating. Now i went and did the Rogers update and cant get Sense UI on my phone. I am bought ready to stick my sim back in my 3gs

I have also had the same problem with my Magic connecting, but losing sync with a minute or so.
I think I've solved it by going into my routers settings and changing the beacon interval from 100 to 40.
Since then, no issues what-so-ever! Stoked!
Hopefully this solves the problem for a few more people

Hello All,
I reached this post, while facing a similar issue of Wifi not working on my G1.
I have gone through the posts and replies on this issue carefully and discovered that I practically did all of the recommended steps, i.e. Trying "no security" to WEP and WPA etc securities.
I am on a D-Link Dir-300. And 3 laptops and an iPhone and a G1 already run on its wifi and security type, like a charm.
Now the 'fun' began when my brother bought a second hand (unlocked) G1 from market today and SNAP! it was not making it through to Wifi. Yes it got connected successfully, and I even checked in Status of Router's config, and it was there. but no browsing.
I put my personal and brother's G1s together and started comparing. The difference came out to be of different build numbers.
Mine is DMD64
and my brother's is DRC92.
Honestly I dont know about difference of builds being making difference here.
Please help, I am desperate..
