Someone please clear this up or find a resolution to have real aim on the G1 with it using data instead of text messaging.....

i think this is crucial to the success of the G1 becuz some many ppl are leaving they're sidekick....thinkin that the messaging is going to be the same but its not from what im seeing and hearing!

A lot of Americans use AIM for their instant messaging needs.
As opposed to Europeans liking MSN more.
Asians liking ICQ/MSN more...
It's all preference.
Don't worry there's bound to be some developer that's going to be creating an app for it.

look guys, there are half a million questions we still have about the G1, part of not knowing is the fun, yea it may cost you a 1 month total big bill, but then you will learn, or we will learn together, thats why we are here! If anybody has swapped at least 3 or 4 phones in the last couple of years, you know what im talking about! Just the mere fact the we are here at AC, means we do have a clue when it comes to, what will be the best phone regardless, in the market.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea i was a little worried cuz imma sidekick user and i've always had an sidekick and i've never seen a mobile device wit better instant messagin capabilities.....

so not to have aim would really suck since i've been using it all my life lolllll but thanks i guesss we'll wait for that developer....

i aim'ed when i had aolhell years and years ago, then i kept the user name when i dropped aol, and used it since, with my pc's and stuff, now i switched to a mac last year, should of done it years ago, and i use it with ichat now. so it would be cool to keep on using it with android. ive got lots os contacts.

My entire office uses AIM, its much more efficient then picking up the phone to call someone to bring you up some files or emailing them. Our offices departments communicate alot so AIM has always been a big tool with us. I've gotten so much work done on the road thanks to AIM.

MSN Messenger was always my favorite but since everyone is usually on AIM i tend to stick w/ it so its easier to communicate w/ everyone.

Im 23 and I still "aim"... even though, aside from the definition of the word that relates to "aiming a weapon" or whatever, I've never heard anyone use the anagram "AIM" as a verb, like justme did earlier.

I use a chat client named Digsby for all my IM-ing. Just like Trillian, or whatever, it combines all my services into one. I have friends that will only use gTalk, some that will only use AIM, and some that only use YahooIM, so this type of program is a must for me.

But now we are completely digressing from the point.

I too hope that there is a data-backed AIM client for the G1 soon! I am stretching to be able to afford the +$25/mo for the 400msg data plan, so I hope I can use AIM to my heart's content and not have to worry about it.

I like to think AIM and texting have totally screwed our youth out of their final and most remote chance of having proper spelling and grammar...

but that's just me, I guess... "lolollolololllolololllll" :P

The speculation is that they count as sms text messages. Tmobile does this on the vast majority of their phones.

My wife and I AIM all the time, we're in our early 30's. And most of my friends are on AIM too. Easy way to keep in touch.

HMMM, i doubt it tho. I think thats why thehy make u get the data plan much like with the Sidekick.

I have a 900min shared plan, and at end of month we barely reach 200 min, but we each have over 2500 txt messages, and thats not counting the AIM messages, I have it on all the time and use that when the people I usually text are online.

It's confirmed from T-Mobile's website. I had a screenshot that I uploaded to some forum the other day... and I'd do it again right now if t-mobile's site wasn't down for scheduled maintenance.

Tmobile says that AIM & Y! IMing will be via SMS, but gTalk is over XMPP protocol.

The text form the site is as follows:
"AIMŪ and Yahoo! Messenger use a text messaging protocol to send messages. Google Talk actually uses an XMPP protocol, which is billed as Internet access."

Wait a minute, if I have the $35 data plan with the G1, do I have to worry about AIM because its being counted as Text? Or you guys are talking about the $25 Data plan because it has 400 text only and Aiming might get you over your text? (Scratching my head)

Since you have the 35$ data plan, you won't have to worry about it since it includes unlimited data/texts
If you have the 25$ data plan, yes, because right now the AIM service is using a text based platform to get your messages to your receiver :)

Thats so messed up tho such an advanced fone but the messengers using a sms to send messages..thats so messed up.....

Its common sense that its a MESSENGING device....u'd think they'd b smart enough to make the built in messengers to use data..internet......

i mean developers make these powerful fones but sometimes they just messed up...this is like forgettin a 3.5 headfone jack

The G1 comes with a multi-instant messaging program and it will solve your messaging needs. messages are sent as notifcations on the main screen so you'll know when you recieve one even if you dont hear the chime.

There is actually a very good reason, having to do with network design and how phone data transfers work and phone battery life. Keeping a port open and active on a phone isn't like keeping an open active port on your home network.

Some of the solutions for the Blackberries will take the battery life from 3 days to barely one. I used to get 3 whole days on my Curve and barely get two when I just BeeJive, which is one of the least impact on battery life data-centric IM programs for the Blackberry.

Because they want you to use GTalk. (never met someone who uses, in fact never even heard of it.) Notice how it says Gtalk will be based on internet. And how does the Sidekick AIM work so good when its not using internet? I've had my Sidekick for 2 years, and the AIM is whats making me not switch my phone.

ummm... lol. I do not think that messaging apps (including the onboard IM app ) use SMS. that is ridiculous. They use data.

Also, the G1's onboard IM app includes support for gtalk, AIM, yahoo, and Windows Messenger.
