Being a european car driver, I have my own interpretation of speed limits on highways and other roads. On my previous WinMo or Nokia devices, I always had a speed cam warning application, which simply takes a txt file in input with known radar/speedcam positions and shows a kind of "radar" display showing all radar nearby + alerting audibly when closing by and in speed excess.

Well, it seems that all Android Developper stick to the driving rules... or fixed/mobile speedcams are unknown in the US ?

I know there is "Avertisseur de Radar" in the Android market, but it's only supporting France and the developper doesn't answer to emails or doesn't seem open to suggestions.

What I'd like : please visit scdb.info and look at the iPhone/WinMo/Symbian application there. This is exactly what I would like to get on my G1. I'm sure a smart developer could even find an interesting commercial agreement with the admins of scdb.

I DON'T THINK THERE ARE ENOUGH SPEED CAMS USED IN THE STATES TO MAKE THIS APP WORTHWHILE.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS SITE?

There are not many speedcams in the US. At least not that I know of. There are locations that have radars with displays, but they are not automated ticketing stations. More of a warning. We do have red light cameras. They are becoming much more common.

Anyways, your request doesn't seem very far fetched. You just need someone that is willing to work on it. Unfortunately I don't know java so I am out. Likely you will want to get in touch with someone that is also in the UK. They are more likely to have a personal vested interest in the cause.

Good luck.

Do you guys know about any Android developper community in Europe to whom I could submit app ideas ?
BTW, I don't wish you get as much ticketing speedcams as we have in Europe. If you had as much, such application would be there since a long time. I can tell you my former Nokia device helped me save a LOT of money.

Indeed, it is another option. In Europe we have something equivalent which is called Wikango (http://www.alertegps.co.uk/index.asp?lang_choice=EN).

Seen the french mobile operator SFR is launching an Android app contest to celebrate the introduction of the G1/G2 models in that country, maybe we'll see a version of Wikango for Android...

My small town is installing over 250 by 2010 - this is also spreading to Sacramento and eventually San Francisco... They also have plans to adopt a checkpoint based system in California similar to new jersey and new york where your time between tolls and cam checkpoints calculates your speed and you get tickets in the mail.

Go to the developer sites such as developers.com and post around - someoen will take interest I'm sure. The problem will likely be that the database in the US is a combination of growing too rapidly, and not properly aggregated.

Get in the right lane then. People will go around you and they'll get the tickets mailed to them.

Flybird, I'd love to test this app, unfortunately it is not free and here in Belgium we still don't have access to paid apps in the Android Market.
Do you have any alternate distribution, like could you publish it on Slideme.org, androidgears.com or even maybe on your blog/website ?

Most GPS apps have a POI database that does this....maybe AndNav could be your solution, especially if you were willing to help find a public domain speedcam database for them to use.

I say spam the trapster site, I think the demand has not been great enough for them to get out of bed with Steve Jobs.

Lets make a demand for the Android port of trapster.
