Sorry I this has been discussed elsewhere, I searched the forum, but I did not see anything that directly applies to my question.
In gmail I have my contacts sorted by groups, easy enough, on occasion I need to add a new group or move a contact from one group to another, which is easy enough using a pc and my gmail account.
However, I cannot seem to add new groups or edit existing groups on my G1. I can see the groups, I can sort by groups, but I cannot find an option that will allow me to add or edit any groups.
Does anyone know how this is done on the G1? I
suppose I could use the browser to log on to my gmail account an change it from there but isn’t that sort of redundant since I am on my gmail account using the G1?
One other thing, maybe someone knows, when G1 contacts sync with my gmail why don’t the contact photos sync?
Thanks,
C

It could be that Google (whom aren't perfect) may have not added a group feature for the phone...
It's still so many things they haven't added to the phone that you can access on a PC.

Any one else notice the oddity that when you add a new group in gmail it shows up on the G1 but the default groups (Family, Friends, Coworkers) do not show up? Kind of odd.

I noticed that too. Is there anyway to fix this? Or is this something Google overlooked since I don't see many people talking about this issue?

Same thing here... I noticed that today trying to filter my contacts to call my dad... and for a momento though that I had no Family group created (weird) but gmail has it by default and you can't edit it or delete it... I don't want to create a "My Family" group, I would be really happy if anyone can find a fix for this! :)

I have tested Contacts saving from the phone directly and found the following:
When saving a new contact (say from a call list) the contact gets saved (after sync) to the first sync group (if you’ve not chosen a sync group then it gets saved in “My Contacts”). In my case the first sync group is “- Business” so my Test contact got syncd to that group. If you only have a single sync group for Android, like "Phone" and put all contacts you want on the phone in there then there's no need to read on I guess :p but if you have multiple sync groups then do carry on!
Now since I have a lot of Gmail contacts this can be a bit tedious filing through on Gmail later if you’ve added several new contacts from the phone so what I have done is created a new group called “- Android Holding”*** so now when I save a new contact from the phone they sync to that group and added the holding group on the phone as a sync group (do this first).
This means basically that I can later go into Gmail and move new contacts from the “- Android Holding” group into Family, Business or whatever and since those groups are set to sync anyway the phone won’t know any different.
This is just an extra process to do for new contacts, an easy one too. At least until Google add the option to add new contacts to a group of your choosing from the phone directly anyway.
***I have used a dash before the group names because this quickly sets them apart form the default groups in Gmail as I don’t use them since you cannot select them for sync in Android.

Hi, after going to all the effort of rooting my Desire JUST to get the stock androids app, I've just ran into this problem now :( I just want to use one group on Gmail, a group I created myself, lets call it "Cormie". I want this to be the only group displayed in contacts and I want all saved contacts to go here... but they don't!
Robbie, when you say that the contact gets saved to the first sync group, this doesn't happen for me, are you sure when you add a contact, it definitely gets saved in your "business" group and not just the my contacts/all contacts group? Even though the only group I have set to display is "cormie" and I've even pressed and held on all the other groups to get the option to "remove group", new contacts won't save to "cormie". In fact, I'm not even sure where they do save to, just "all contacts" I think?..
If you did indeed get them to sync direct with the "business" or "-android holding" group, can you please tell me your settings?
Any help appreciated!

This was of course back with the HTC Magic so I don't know if it's changed on Android 2.1 with the Desire/Nexus One but if I create a new contact on my Desire I can choose what group they go in, if I forget to put them in a group then they automatically get put into the "My Contacts" group.
Not a problem any more though as it's not likely I will forget to put them in a group.

Thanks for the reply. So you have a Desire now? But the desire "people" app doesn't have the "Sync Group" option in which you can get rid of all the other groups and just display one? If you see this thread: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f12/stock-contacts-add-new-contact-wont-sync-to-selected-group-34691/ I've started a new one with my exact requirements on it. Would appreciate any help at all :)

I think I found your answer...
In order to create new groups:
1. Log into your GMail Account (create one if you don't have one and activate it with you phone).
2. Click your 'Contacts' button.
3. Click 'New Group'.
4. Add your new group.
This should instantly sync to your phone so that you have your new group waiting for you as soon as you edit your next contact.
Hope that helps!

For syncing contact groups, the above advice didn't help me. Either the options weren't present in the same menus, or the entire menu was missing. The contacts themselves were syncing; I could add dots or dashes to a phone number and see the results transfer bidirectionally. The groups wouldn't copy no matter whether I created them on the phone or the web (desktop)
To synchronize your Gmail contacts to your Android phone, try "Contact Group Manager" by DWP. It'll push to and pull from your Gmail contact groups.
It's the first result when you search the market for "contact groups," and as of 2010-10-17 it's free.
I'd have paid a couple bucks for it a week ago, and knowing today how well it works and how much heartache it could have saved, I'd have paid TEN bucks a week ago.

It's DWP. And also, I apologize for having lied... I searched for "contact group, singular. Not plural. It's still free though.

yep found it now... guess it was the extra s...
Looks pretty good.
I also tried groupU and it seems similar.
Peoples comments one the product were it needed a dialer to replace the default contact app. My question is... can you replace the default contact app? Cause if I want a dialer I go to the phone icon, I don't want to dial a custom number if I go to the people icon...

I need to amend my comments. They looked that same... But Contact Group Manager has a sort feature (which isn't the right word) which lets you choose which groups to show. At first it didn't seem to do anything. But the next day when I started it up, it actually only showed me the groups I had checked. Which is almost exactly what I would like. :) It would be better if I could just set a group to display the contents of by default, but this is close enough.
