View Full Version : Instant message speed on the G1

Greetings,

I have been a long time fan of the Sidekick for a few key features, most of which the G1 has been said to have (full keyboard, multitasking, no Microsoft OS.)

One thing I have not seen addressed is the speed at which instant messages are sent and received (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc.) I used a Tmobile Dash for a day, and noticed that incoming messages often took 35 to 40 seconds to arrive, with at least that much time between them, even if sent back to back. This delay was enough to render IM functionality useless, as people would get frustrated by the amount of time it took to get a response from me. Hopefully it was just a shortcoming of the IM client for Windows Mobile.

The Sidekick utilizes a special protocol that minimizes this delay. Does anyone know if the G1 will also have this low-latency message reception capability? Will the 3G network implementation render this a moot point?

The client that came on the MDA/Wing (probably the same one you were using) was the issue. I think it was set to check for new messages a little bit too infrequently. Usually I would just refresh the buddy list to get new messages.

It seemed to be a software issue with that specific application. I tried other software on my Windows Mobile phone and the lag virtually no more than being on a PC.

Being that Google/T-Mobile is touting this as the "smarterer, funner, connecteder" phone that lets you do everything and keep in touch with your friends, and it will be using an entirely different client, I'm confident it will have a lower latency.

I have the Google talk application installed on my Pearl and I have never noticed any type of lag (sending/receiving).

once again clarifying this issue... the client that is installed on the dash by default is OZ communicator which utilizes the text messaging system in order to retrieve your messages, thats why it takes so long... if you notice the sidekick does not have this, and its not some special protocol... the messaging application on the sidekick is constantly connected to the internet on the sidekick, thats why you'll get them right away and it doesn't go through the sms system... plus t-mobile ties pretty much anything imagineable into the sidekick service to sorta make you get it, but in all honesty what the heck is a sidekick for without the service so its a catch 22...

without the service you cannot use the IM clients because unlike most of the phones that t-mobile carries, the sidekick does not utilize the text messaging system in order to get your messages, it uses a client similar to a PC... connects directly to the IM server

so in short, if you use the OZ communicator on the G1 (assuming thats what it has, i don't know) then yes there will more than likely be a delay, but if you find another program that is connected through the internet on your G1 (would recommend one that utilizes the EDGE capability rather than 3G battery drainer) then it will work fine

given your logic, since the sidekick doesn't charge texts for it's IM's, it isn't using the OZ communicator..
likewise, Gtalk does not charge to your texts, so it shoudl have no lag, I cannot say the same for AIM/YAhoo/MSN/etc... but I don't use those anymore anyhow.

thats correct, most of the google features will be running directly off the internet, if not all of them

Thanks guys, sounds like I have nothing to worry about. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be disastrously slow like the client for the dash.

Please be aware that Yahoo/AIM/MSN will use text messages. Only GTalk uses data. I am hoping that someone develops a program that uses data for Yahoo IM and AIM (I don't use MSN)

No, thru a Jabber client. I have all of my contacts (MSN, AIM and Yahoo) on GTalk.

i think a few board members have verified that this capability will not be included on the G1 gtalk client... so another program will be needed in order to do this apparently

im sure it will be fast like on the sidekick, i have a sidekick too but im confident in the software on the G1 so if it doesnt have instant 1 second messaging at first, it will soon come.

if the continued interest in the android platform continues to boom, expect most of the peoples' hopes on this board to be fulfilled... almost all the questions that people have posted on these boards i will assume to be answered in the next coming months...

just take a look at handango.com, and see how many applications there are out there, most of them if not all already exist on the windows platform... i can assure you an open source operating system that is more stable and faster than windows mobile will spark great interest in any and all developers...

I'd like to see Pidgin or Adium for the Android platform. That would be really nice. I don't care about the little messenger that is default at the moment. I want a real multi messenger. :-)
