View Full Version : 10 GB Cap....!

We all knew the 1GB cap was quickly changed, but we weren't all sure to what, at least I know I wasn't. Well I was reading another site, and someone by the name of B. who works for T Mobile (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=11757852#) wrote the following....
"FYI the training material had a whole section on out “throttling” policy which is……wait for it…..if you reach 10 GB of data usage in a single billing cycle you MAY be cut back to 50kb for the remainder of your cycle and on the start of your new cycle your full data speed will be restored. it also said that we expect LESS than 1% of customer to experience this. its a relief, this will leave people really free to do what they want. im surprised that the cap is so high to be honest."
Sounds great!

I'll have Vincent confirm this, thanks ;)

This would be perfect, if it is correct.

yeah, I mean don't take my word for it, because I don't know this person. But he said he took his training for the G1 and seem to know a lot about the G1, so he seemed somewhat credible, but then again, we never know. Hopefully it is true...

10 GB sounds great. Now that's what I call a fair cap. Someone using more than that on their *mobile phone* definitely is using it excessively, so it's fair enough.
Personally, even at 3G speeds, I don't foresee myself using more than the previous 1GB limit :D, let alone reaching even close to this new limit ;).

thats an awful lot of data transfer. Thats like buying 2500-3000 songs in a month... sheesh!

This is great to hear if true! :D

this makes so much more sense. Most folks won't get close to this, some will work their best to hit it and a very, very few will get pinched for being greedy. T-Mo comes out looking like a hero, but too bad they didn't have that vision initially.

i'd say this is a generous amount...and anyone who hits 10gb consistently probably needs to be slowed down

Is the cap Bytes or Bits?
Maybe I'm thinking of this wrong, but I think the 1 Gb cap can be hit pretty quickly. I've never done this since I don't have 3G, but I've heard some people can and will stream internet radio through their cell phone. Doing some real quick / round up kind of math I get:
64kbps (typical low quality FM like radio)
* 60 sec * 60 min = 240 Mb for one hour of streaming radio.
Do that once a day while at work, and in one week you'll be at 1.2 Gb.
So if it's Bits then you can easily pass 1 Gb and it doesn't seem too hard to reach 10 either. Now if it's Bytes then nevermind :)

I'm sure many of us will not even come close to getting to 10GB in one month, but keep in mind that todays websites are a lot more media intensive than we think. we've gotten used to cable internet when thigns seems to load instantaneously, but the truth is, pages like engadget.com of htcsource.com have nearly 1MB of HTML, Java, and images to load up.
Surf the web for 15 minutes, visiting 3-4 sites, maybe 15-20 pages and you've easity racked up 20MB of data usage. And that's before you've even played any youtube clips through TuneWiki of gotten direction through google maps.

Wow, I hope that is true. I won't feel bad about streaming music and video all day.

It really depends how often we will use the G1 to surf the internet. I am sure if desktop or laptop option exists it will be utilized over using the phone, draining the battery, etc :)

That would be so cool if its true.

I think 10GB is good for 99.999% users (including myself, and I tether most of the time)

Well, why have a cap at all if they project that less than 1% of users will hit 10GB per month?
Im pretty sure they do need to have some control over it.

it's been awhile since i did this, but correct me if i'm wrong--->>>i'm pretty sure streaming is in bits, not bytes.
64kbits ps=8000 bytes ps =7.8125 kilobytes per second =468.75 kilobytes per minute = 28,125 kilobytes per hour =27 mb an hour x 6 hours per day=162 mb x 5 days = 810 mb a week =4,050 mb a month =3.95 gb a month.
i stream shoutcast on edge for roughly 6 hours a day at work,5 days a week. edge usually gives me 64kbps max before it buffers too much. i hope my calculations are correct because if you are right, i'll be getting throttled by tmo on a monthly basis, or..... i must stop enjoying my commercial free radio at work. that blows.

i HIGHLY doubt anyone can go over 10gb per month, how much internet will you use? Dont forget the device is MOBILE and has a battery that needs to be recharged sometimes lol.

I'm a pretty heavy Youtube user (I can easily rack up an hour a day) should I be worried?
