One of the many glaring omissions still not featured on the iPhone is support for Flash. Rumors keep circulating that Flash will be coming to the iPhone, but that has failed to happen and unless something big changes this isn’t the year of flash for iPhone fans.

Adobe has announced it will be released the beta version of Flash Player 10 for smartphones in October. The player will be offered for Android, Symbian, Windows mobile, and webOS, notice iPhone OS is missing.

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen said that ARM, NVIDIA, Broadcom, Intel, TI, and Quallcomm are all optimizing the player for their products right now. Narayen said, “Multiple partners have already received early version of this release and we expect to release a Beta version for developers.”

  1. What/who is your source?
  2. androidguys.com is reporting it. No flash for iphone though!
  3. Yeah, it looks to be true.

But I would prefer a world without flash.
  4. I wonder how if this will bring the cpu to it's knees?
  5. The story has been out since February...
  6. who cares? i love that the world (led by the mobile computing boom) has left flash behind and coded around it. youtube, iplayer apps, lots of java.

the last thing we need is flash being acceptable again.

that said, makes a nice **** you to the iPhone!
  7. flash has been coming since november. i'll believe it when i believe it. it's second only to how long 3G has supposedly been coming to my area of the country.
  8. already have flash =D good stuff though.

haha those are some mighty high conditions.
  10. Honestly who cares now. Even Google is pretty much planning to move to the HTML 5 video tag. Chrome already supports it to I imagine "Chrome lite" will too. If YouTube moves then you can expect just about every video site out there to move to that and leave Flash behind. Outside of video and games I don't think people view that much Flash on average.

Internet Explorer won't be supporting HTML 5 until the standards been finalized. So yeah all the other major browsers may have some support for it now but until IE takes up HTML 5 you can expect flash to stay dominate.

Even when it does come around Flash will have a long life thanks to people not upgrading from ie 6 - 8
  12. I think we have to remember that Flash is a lot more than a simple internet plugin to enhance your browsing experience. Flash can be used in hundreds of different ways, just like Java can. app developers should be able to take advantage of the power of Flash and create some very cool games and apps on the Android platform that they then simply transfer over to WM or Symbian. It's so much more than watching video clips in your browser.

  13. Flash is always great in theory and theres always someone to say its more than just a plugin for watching videos. But for the most part these other great uses don't have actual implementations in the real world. Its simply not used outside of video and online flash games.

Also Google is working away to drive HTML 5 consumer adoption. Look for their Wave service to require it. It will be popular and will drive any browser not supporting HTML 5 (mainly IE) to support it and users to upgrade or switch. I'm not one to say "technology X is dead" like many other zealots but in this case....
