Today the people at MetroPCS announced their very first Android handset (so young, so in love!) as the LG Optimus M. This M model is similar to phones offered by Spring (who has the S) and T-Mobile (who has the T). This LG Optimus M will cost you $230 with an unbelievable(?!) $50 no-contract monthly plan offered by MetroPCS. This version M has a 3.2 megapixel camera, runs Android 2.2, and has a 3.2-inch touchscreen for all your tapping and swiping and whatnot. Available November 24th, just in time for… you know… purchasing it for yourself.

Really truly, they’re offering this perfectly wonderful seeming phone on a $50 per month no annual contract plan. Isn’t that too good to be true? Perhaps we’ll all be able to have our Froyo and eat it too? Take a look at the full press release below:

  1. Wow what a great user friendly phone.all thr features are awesome.the greatest thing no contracts.i would recomend this phone to anyone.

  2. Just got the LG Optimus Android Phone and I love it! Works great…feels like a iphone..many many apps. All around the best phone i’ve ever owned!

  3. I just bought this phone yesterday and im already highly upset because the example phone had high speed everything youtube and all…unfortunately my phone didnt…but the worse part is to top it all off is that metropcs associates, store and representitives on the phone no nothing about this phone to fix it…dnt get me wrong the phone is amazing..buts its pretty blood boiling to argue with a rep that this phone is not youtube compatible and its not a smartphone after I witnessed with my ooown eyes that youtube works amazingly and another rep said it was a smartphone.lets pray all these issues are resolved cuz theres a no return/exchange policy. 🙁

  4. Oooh n I also 4got that I literally,no exaggeration, spent 2 hrs on the phone tryin 2 get my phone where it should b,going thru 4 different reps n 6 different solutions, 2 jus end up wit everything erased off my phone n the same issues I started with…i went thru 3 expensive metropcs phones with high hopes just to end up wantin to throw them away

  5. i went to the store today and asked about a similar thing WASTING$. they said that it works sweet with wifi but might be slow when on metro. my exact question was will this phone have the old metro internet interface wich my last phone had when i was with metro 2 years ago. i couldnt really get a straight answer.

so if anybody knows about the web browser and the speeds let me know.

  6. The phone is good. the service is as good as the area you live in. on wifi it is as good as sprint’s or tmobiles. software is decent and all is functional. youtube works, even embedded. has flash 11. really likable and looks/works great. i have many jealous friends who are spending a lot more for their service.

  7. This is a great phone. I just got it myself. Thank you a Million MetroPCS. This a dream comes true. All works well. Internet, Youtube, Email Attachments……

  8. This phone is exactly as advertised, an excellent entry level smart phone powered by Android on the existing Metro PCS network. I had previously had a Samsung Freeform and with the new extended coverage with Metro had internet access via phone from Atlanta to Tulsa with no issues. But you are getting what you pay for, which is a 2G speed pre-paid network phone, so don’t expect Verizon or Sprint 3-4g speeds while on the cell network, will NOT happen, and this phone (from what I understand is NOT 4G capable when Metro upgrades your area). That said it ROCKS! I’ve had cell phones since 1990, worked for 3 different carries, and for $50/month unlimited EVERYTHING it works perfectly. Auto switches to WIFI when in range, works great/speedy, all the android Market apps i’ve found so far work, except it seems the phone does not support FLASH (from what I have found). But no contract, $229, and only $50/month i love it! Oh and Art on the “old metro internet interface” , since its an Android phone you can download any of a number of browsers including Chrome and Opera, so pick the internet interface of your choice!

  9. Why is it that the Optimus S and T can display above 12 million colors at a time and the optimus M can only handle around 65,000?

why do metro users get the shaft on almost every phone? Why are the users not aware of such a discrepancy in technology (and NOT price!?)

  10. no flash?
    no exchange policy?
    limited color display?
Anyone know if its the old internet?
    “not a smart phone?”

ok, so how about this, anyone know if we can just flash the optimus S or T onto metro?

  11. I guess i see it differently, to get a similar plan on Spring (yes with faster data speeds) gets is $99 plus tax vsl $50 period on Metro. So if you like me use a lot of voice minutes, the different of $600 a year. Lets run the #’s since Spring requires a 2 year contract:

SPRINT – $50 phone (online discount), plus $1200+ for the $99/month unlimited plan = 2 year cost of $1250+tax.

MetroPCS – $229 plus tax for phone, plus $600 even for the $50/month unlimited plan = $829+tax.

So is it worth $400+ over 2 years, thats up to the individual, but to me more importantly is the lack of a contract, so if Verizon or another carrier in 6-12 months come up with a competitive plan to Metro (that fits my needs), i jump immediately and only have the sunk costs of the $229 phone.

No brainer for my use 🙂

  12. The LG Optimus M is a great starter Android phone, just like the Blackberry Curve 8330 was a good starter blackberry phone. As starters there are going to be some limitations, but as a former user of the BB Curve 8330 and a current user of the LG Optimus M I have to say that my LG Android surpasses my ex BB Curve.

I give everything on this phone a 9 or 10 with the exception of the camera and the battery. Flash should’ve been added to the camera and like every other android (and even Blackberry) phones out there, the battery is nothing to write home to mother about.

With the LG Optimus M, I am able utilize all the android apps, use my google apps, listen to my vmail, write an email or two, stream pandora, download music onto my 2GB SD (with an upgradeable 32 GB) surf the web, watch youtube videos, Facebook, tweet, post to my business website, my personal tumblr, and look at Adobe Flash websites. Need I go on? For $249 I got a fabulous phone with the Android 2.2 (froyo) OS.

I am able to write emails and text fast and w/o misspelled words! Visually speaking this is by far the BEST LOOKING LG Optimus out there. Very refined, durable, and easy on the hands.

NO there is no 3G, but I am still able to surf the Internet and download android apps w/o Wifi FAST. With Wifi, the internet is SUPER FAST. Also the calls are clear and loud, and the reception is up to par. Go Metro! (n I am based in NYC). As a bootstrapping entrepreneur this phone works wonderful for me, and it is easy on the pocket which allows me to spend money on other important things like rent or on other business matters.

If you are expecting a Droid X, EVO, or Incredible then you need to either go to Sprint or Verizon. A fair comparison would be Droid (Droid 2 or X) vs. HTC ( EVO or Incredible) and Samsung vs. LG

  13. AndroidDiva724 – how did you get the “look at Adobe Flash websites” to work? I can’t find Flash for this phone in the Market, nor via Adobe’s website, and the few flash site’s ive tried say my phone doesn’t support it. Any tips?

I would agree with the rest of your review, like mine, really enjoyed last night eating dinner by myself and watching Youtube clips and TV.Com on the resturants Wifi!

  14. Ok, if it can handle youtube, then that’s fine and good, but that wasn’t the point I was making:

Aside from the performance differences, these 3 phones are the same. They could have just as easily made one phone for all 3 carriers. The price is comparable enough.

If its not 3G, shouldn’t the price reflect it?

  15. “If its not 3G, shouldn’t the price reflect it?” From a consumer, I agree, it should be cheaper compared to its peers that run on 3g. But, from a business side, if people will buy it at same price w/out the service speed improvments, why wouldn’t MetroPCS make the $$ (if it was my company, i would!), folks who use MetroPCS get a cool phone on a reasonable price plan (cheapest I believe for the full unlimited services) so consumers either buy it or not, if we don’t buy it (too late for me!! LOL) they either Metro will decrease the price (like most carriers do when their sales come below projections on new phones) or loose customers/sales… 🙂

  16. This is the worst phone i have ever had, went to vegas 4 days after i got it , could not use the phone at all, no coverage. everytime i made a call,or someone called me the screen goes black and cant answer or end a call…. can not surf the internet, and i would be hooked up to wifi and get error message saying i was not server was busy….. REALLY? Do not get this phone….

  17. Into my 3rd week with the Optimus, and here is what i’ve found different:

    – No Flash – As others have suggested, download Skyfire from the market and off you go! all the Flash sites video now works for me!

    – very flexible, when I know I am going to be using the phone a lot for voice, i just switch the Wifi OFF, and my battery goes a lot longer.

    – No issues with the wifi running in the background while talking on the phone, no stuttering or call degredation.

    – Love the integrated features (as with most smart phones) of being able to immediately upload photos/video to Facebook for my family to see.

I still laugh at my friends who are shelling out $100+ a month for unlimited everything on the other networks. Yes, in the car while only on cell network their iPhone and HTC Evo are faster on the internet, but that is 1% of my use. If you are looking for a VERY fast smartphone for primarily on the cell networks, this isn’t the phone or the cell company to use.

  18. I have the new metro pcs android it is perfect except out of all things I got screwed. Why would they make a android phone with a 2g connection that really sucks I mess up by selling my samsung craft which is 4g and it shows youtube real good NO BUFFERING . The android one takes forever to play. They should have made the craft a smart phone like the samsung code it wouldof been #1 I believe.

  19. @ trepman, thanks for the confirmation that makes me feel a little less easy about putting money into this phone.

I do believe however that the Optimus S can function as a mobile hot spot.

For the other reader who mentioned from a business standpoint you would also overcharge consumers for this phone. Yeah, I suppose we are just paying for the name aren’t we?

So my original argument/statement was: why couldn’t we just buy the superior phone and just flash it to metro pcs? has anyone tried this or know anyone who has?

The very worst case scenario I could imagine would be that you’d use the phone functions (talk, text, web) on the metro network and everything else on wifi. (Meaning that you couldn’t access the metro network for the net or apps)

but I really don’t see that as a strong possibility, but can anyone confirm this?
If anything I’ll try this out myself.

  20. the internet didn’t quite help so i went to radioshack to interview a few people about it.

From what I gather the LAST thing you want to do is flash the optimus S or T onto metro pcs.

Even with wifi, you will not be able to access the android market.

There was no reason stated but possibly has to do with the way it gets flashed.

It seems that this optimus M really is the best choice at the moment. No free hotspot for metro users.

  21. This phone sucks not worth buying at all this is slow in downloads battery sucks and if you just unlock the phone screen it wont receive calls without wi fi so you need wifi to get a freakin call even if your just fixing the settings . Metro needs to get better phone not phone that cant even receive calls while youare web browsing I bought a phone from you I expect the shit to receive CALLS! And their customer service is extrwmely poor the person knew the phone did it and yet he still sold to me for 311.00 dollars stop selling phones that are low in tech and get better coverage your customers are trusting you people to sell us phone that work and are attractive you have phone that are so old in tech yet you overprice them and have a shitty return policy I am truly dissapointed!!!

  22. I had the same problem with my screen going blank during a call. After alot of research I found the problem was my screen protector covering part of the sensor. Once I cut that part off I no longer had an issue. Big relief because I love my phone. Hope this helps…

  23. A scam no youtube. Phone should.be pulled off market. Youtube only works on wifi
Even then its slow.. On 600mhz processor. Ftc should pull phone n force metro to compensate victims. No documentation says youtube requires wifi

  24. Metro dont care. They are setting up 4g for phones they dont even have. Screwing over customers. The rep lied to me about 3g. metro squashed it. Wifi is irrelevant. At home I can use pc. What sit at a wifi spot th that has banned streaming. We should all burn down metro pcs stores till ftc does something. I don’t appreciate them scamming me. Times u can afford to treat yourself some scanner like metro is operating. Not to mention not getting calls from jobs or calls not going through fcc should take over the net nmake it free. Metro could provide 3g they just don’t want to

  25. This board seems trip be a scam new posts are suppose to be at the top.
People investigating andriod metro pcs will be duped. Dude u traded in a craft for this. Some one needs to shoot up metro pcs stores. Samsung streams andriod doesn’t. Andriod has apps craft doesn’t.why do that. Metro is the kkk any way targeting blacks with junk and quagmires. Christisan scum. Surprised its not preloaded with homo child porn

  26. Gov should take over net. How many times are we gonna pay for net. Home, phone, website, rather then a car. War against the telecoms and internet scammers like google

  27. This board has agents on it lying. About youtube when they are secretly on wifi. Metro is the kkk. Based in texas they never submitted. When u use metro u support the

  28. Perhaps the issue is that, in this case, I am referring to Jay, the customer is an idiot. There is nowhere that states that Metro has anything other than a 2G network. They are currently working on expanding a 4G network, at which point, all people using something other than a 4G enabled phone, will have 3G. The phone will ring if you are not using the web. If you are, Data prevails and calls go directly to voicemail. At this point, I have not located anyway to change that. The bottom line is, Metro has not false advertised in any way. They have been upfront about their service, never claiming to be 3G. Yes, you can stream you tube….it is very very slow unless you have a wi-fi connection. I can stream Pandora without having a wi-fi connection though…and that is nothing to belittle. And to call them the KKK???? Just goes to show that some people will blame racism for everything.

  29. Metro pcs knows it a scam. And they know their customer base is not proactive or out top defend their constitutional rights. Do scammers like mrtro can lie. Over sell an under deliver. Bait n switch. N bitches like u wanna defend em. U must be kkk too.

  30. Did you hear. They have new 4g price plans. Boy they are really in the 4g game now. Are they not. Lol metro is such a scam.metro pcs does not have 4g smart phones. Why would they come out with samsung craft. N 2 andriod phones that are not 4g.yet every news story on metro pcs is about 4g and andriod yet they dont have 4g an ndroid

  31. You are defending something that can not be defended. Selling 3g phones when you openly admit to bypass service for those phones. I read that article by mrtro pcs president where they by pass 3g provisioning.

  32. Mrtro is the kkk. As is everest, and all those scam schools that detroy our educational system scamming 2ok loans to learn how to wipe ass. Why is metro spamming these ads to my phone

  33. Now if I go beat the reps ass that sold me the phone or pop his ass for not being a man or keeping it real then metro 2 blame not him. He just catching hell from metros bull. Cause mrtro thinks this shit is a game

  34. My other option was a, minute phone and at t 20 dollar u verse dsl. I made the wroong choice metro is dialup but they charge dsl rates

  35. 20 dollar u verse. You can get a new lap to for the price of thid phone. Plus its jew made so the will have new versions every week or so just to keep the poor from using it

  36. Andriod gets to many viruses. Whats the deal key loggers, on this phone suck. Jews have out did themselves with this phone I see why hitler was killing them

  37. Beware metro pcs is in kkk and in. bed wit. Joel osteen, sarah palin, john engler, john mccann, david duke, colonel sanders and the rest

  38. I am very new new to the application swipe phone industry but so far love my phone. I am learning it’s many uses slowly but it firgives and teaches. Only problem I have is when Metro sold me the phone my bill went up to $61 and change. thought it was supposed to be $50? STILL, the best deal and my friends are so jealous cuz my phone is just as good if not faster too-right now money saved is really important and Metro in my area has great customer service too. <3

  39. Sam, mine went up the same, I was told that there was some one time fee or something, and that it would go back down to normal on my next bill.
I had an issue with my screen blacking out and not coming on, not when I pushed any of the buttons or when my friend called me, and i couldn’t answer of course because the screen wasn’t responsive to touch either. Has anyone else seen this? Any insight?

    • its your screen protector is covering the sensor in the top left of the screen. to the left of the speaker. you have to pull the film off that comes on the screen when you get the phone before putting the screen protector on. Nothing is wrong with the phone. The sensor is there to save battery when making calls. Without the film your screen will come back on when you pull it away from your face

      • thank you so much i bought my phone yesterday and after like 2 hours it started doing that and thanks to you i still get 2 keep my phone and my screen protector, really thank you

  40. Honestly the only problem that i have with phone is with youtube but i dont even use it that often. Other than that there is the problem with the coverage area sometimes when traveling i might slip into verizons network but that only happened once for like 2.5 seconds….. Im happy with the service and would recommend it to anyone. My mom just gave up here service and switched to metro, only the phone she got was complete crap (hauwai) but thats it. Its not a big deal. If you dont like the service than you dont have to have it. ( NO CONTRACT) just stop paying the bill and suck it up.

  41. Another update (outraged customer). So I bought the phone and like everything about it so far… except the fact that two weeks after I bought it they introduced it for a lower price- they didn’t let me return it or get the mail in rebate. I got the shaft on that one and I’m sure they’re just laughing all the way to the bank.

That’s not what this post is about though.
    Hotspot widget.
Unlike other optimus phones- the optimus M is not suppose to be able to host a wireless network. (i.e. you’d hook up your laptop to your phone for ‘free’ internet.)

after some snooping I found that the optimus S can pull it off without any extra moola by way of an widget called “Hotspot widget”.

Tried it out for myself to an inconclusive end. I’m here to spread the word: try this app and let me know if anyone figures out how to configure the signal our phones send out. It works, it does, but unless we can control that signal there are some devices that just won’t connect to it.

Needless to say I will try again until I get some results.

  42. GREAT PHONE I LOVE IT! I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES. CONNECTS TO MY WIRELESS AT HOME-WORK-DUNKIN DONUTS ETC…LOL AS FAR AS A VIRUS, I HAVE AVG. ANTI VIRUS ON THE PHONE. I AM ONLINE ALL THE TIME WITH NO PROBLEMS!!

  43. I bought mine the day it came out and the as of maybe 2 weeks ago the battery life on it as gone straight down the tube. I’m lucky if I get through a 1/4 of my day without having to recharge my phone. Lasts only roughly 5 hours but probably less.

  44. this phone sucks.calls are being dropped phone will not allow you to hang up and text messages are not going through… by far the worst metro has ever treat a loyal customer as i am this way very disrepectful….

  45. Do they make a better battery for the android-optimus lg for metro pcs? I just bought my phone and notice the battery life is quite short.

      • You should download a kill switch to stop your apps from running that is what is causing your battery to die so fast go to your market and search for tools you will find all kind’s of apps that can help you!

    • You should download a kill switch to stop your apps from running that is what is causing your battery to die so fast go to your market and search for tools you will find all kind’s of apps that can help you!

  46. This stupid LG Optimus M freezez up or restarts on a daily basis, at least 2 times a day!! Two of my friends that have the exact same phone says theirs does the same thing!!! This phone is pure TRASH!!! This is the second “Smart Phone” I have had through them. The first being the Windows Phone. I could NEVER get Out Look to work on it and Metro Headquarters couldn’t help! B.S!!! But, this phone is way worse!!! Guess what Metro? I will be getting service through another provider very soon!!!!! Rip off, scammers!!!!!

  47. I love my LG Optimus M yet Metro suck’s they always have and are getting worse. The only problem’s I have is my phone will freeze up when I try to download to many apps at once.

  48. does anybody know how to use the flash for the camera on this phone? Please tell me it has one! Because i ADORE my new phone, you go METRO!!!!

  53. I recently got this phone, I am a little confused because I thought there was supposed to be a LED.light on it that alerts tou of texts and such. Also a lightthat lets you know when your phone is charging and done charging. Also, when sun hits mu phone, I can see in the upper left hand corner where a.light should be. Can someone let me know what I missing?

  54. MetroPCS sucks terrible horrible customer service.

For over a week I argued, begged and pleaded at every level, 6 store reps, 6 online reps. In my opinion all of them incompetent and many rude. Autopay account deleted and recreate at least 4 times. Everyone keeps saying the same thing just go in and update to account info. The account was even verified by a Corporate Center supervisor. Phone service has been shut off twice. Even after the store manager at the corporate Center assured me that it ad been restored.

Then I found the emails for coroprate HQ. Two emails to three execs and the problem was fixed in two hours. You do the math. Corporate email, fax number, phone number and my complaint letter is at http://SwensonStudio.com/MetroPCS.htm
