Facebook for Android hits Market

We’re hearing from multiple Android Community members that a new Facebook application has arrived in the Android Market.  The app seems pretty spartan at present, but does allow access to walls, posting of statuses and commenting.

There’s also a homescreen widget, which allows for posting status updates and browsing those updates of friends.  Meanwhile a live folder can be used to access phone numbers stored through Facebook.

No chat, though, nor many of the features iPhone users have been enjoying, but it’s a start at least.  The app’s development page on Facebook suggests that this isn’t, in fact, an official app, and the early feedback isn’t entirely positive, but the software itself has only just landed in the Android Market so maybe we’ll see more advances after the feedback continues.  Check out the video demo here.

  1. its a good start but it needs improvements
  2. it's going to be the most heavily downloaded 3 star app...
  3. been waiting for this for so long!
  4. By the looks of things it wasn't developed by Facebook. The developer page even states this, plus I somehow doubt that facebook would use the facebook.android@gmail.com as a contact address!!!

babbler seems to be the winner over this one!
  5. This app is *NOT* officially from Facebook. Going to the "Developer's Web Page" takes you to a Facebook "Fan" page. In the "Information" section is a statement below the "Category" that says: "This application was not developed by Facebook."
  6. we have all been bamboozled lol i guess this is the app that orells was beta testing

Yes and no. It IS the "official" Facebook app, and most certainly must have been developed WITH Facebook. Actually, even the iPhone app development page said it was not developed by Facebook up until v. 3 (I think). --And it definitely was. They just gave credit initially to the FB employee who had done the coding. The story behind this app is that Google "lent" FB an Android dev to create this app.

The Palm, Blackberry, and other "official" FB apps also say they were not made by Facebook. Click "mobile" on your computer at the bottom of the screen and check them all out. FB does this for some reason. Also, any previous apps that have been developed have been forced to remove the word "Facebook" from their names. Bloo was originally called something different, and he was forced to change the name. This is why we have "Babbler", "Bloo", "Fbook", etc. You know every one of those devs would have preferred to name their apps "Facebook". I have no doubt this app is developed officially in conjunction with Facebook.
  8. This is great start and so far has a nice interface, but it does need improvement. I hope the negative comments dont push Facebook away from improving it.

I will now use babbler as a backup.
  9. This app is pretty weak to say the least. Just a feed reader. But it seems fast so that’s good. Not sure how speedy notifications are yet. If they are pretty much push it will help make it somewhat useful.

It’s almost identical to the abandoned app friendmobilizer. And that one has an inbox wrapper and wraps people’s walls, photos, etc. The official one pops up browser so you have to wait for that to launch. Mobilizer was abandoned so it doesn’t show comments, but other then that it has more usability. That’s pretty sad.

I don’t know, I wasn’t expecting the world, but I really hope they step up with updates. Missing some real basic function.

Time will tell how fast updates come I guess.

Bloo and Babbler don’t have much to worry about right now
  10. What this app needs is:

The ability to open photos/view photos within the app
    Messages/request tab
    Event calender
*Customizable options( changing profile pics etc)

Other then that, i really like how it looks and works. I love the shake to refresh I wish babbler had that option( babbler was inconsistent when it came to updating the stream).

Agree. For me facebook is mainly about photos, messages, and events. All 3 of these are ignored on this thing.
  12. It is a VERY good baseline start. Better than Babbler and Bloo were on their initial 1.0

I really hope Facebook/Google puts effort into updates. Not just bugfixes, but actual features such as messages, events, photo tag/view, and maybe chat. Chat isn't the highest priority for me but it would be a nice bonus if it could do it. And what's with notifications? I haven't gotten one all day using this app. Is it push?

Maybe the notifications are for status' you send from the app. Bloo kind of works like that too.

Not wowed, but definitely not disappointed. It does what it does so far pretty well and has a WAY better widget than Babbler. The shaky thing to refresh is fun too

    ....NOW WHERE'S MY T-PAIN APP!?!
  13. This app is sweet..all it needs is some minor bug fixes and a chat feature and I will pay a good amount of money..love the widget..maybe it could be bigger like 3/4 of a page a bit hero'ish theme for those of us who aren't going to spend 600 to have it right away
  14. Buy a computer people its the first release. Everybody complains they want it now and here it is.
  15. what was todays update. 1.o.1. about? any idea? i can't find anything new.. then again i never used 1.0 that much to notice any small changes.

bug fix for non English. I also noticed that comments are displayed when you press a status update. Before you had to press twice, which was a bit odd

    Thats it I think
