Dell has a smartphone on the market in China that is based on the Marvell oPhone. The oPhone is a device that was designed and built by Marvell to allow companies to get into the smartphone market without needing to do all the work themselves. Dell is now reportedly looking to bring its oPhone to America.

The rumor is that the handset could be on the American market with AT&T as early as next year. Reports claim that AT&T has already certified the Android-powered Dell device for its domestic network.

Why exactly Dell would want to jump into the smartphone market is easy enough to grasp, the smartphone market has much higher profit margins than the PC market today. The part Dell will have a hard time with is actually offering a device that can set itself apart from other handsets on the market. Considering the oPhone it is said to be based on is a generic platform the odds aren’t good.
