There has been some hints as to new app support coming to the Chromecast. One of the recent hints was for Plex and as of this morning, Google has announced support for that, along with nine other apps. The others include VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, PostTV, Viki, Avia, Real Player Cloud, Revision 3 and BeyondPod.

There isn’t anything needed on the Chromecast side, however those looking to stream from an Android device will need to make sure they have the latest version of the respective app downloaded from the Google Play Store. All in all, this appears to be a decent mix of new apps. Of course, these are merging with the others which include Netflix and Hulu Plus as well as YouTube, HBO GO, Pandora, Google Play TV and Movies and Google Play Music.

We have already seen some of these apps appearing in the Play Store, though officially speaking, Google has said they will be “rolling out over the next few days.” Basically, if the app you are hoping to Chromecast has yet to be updated, some patience may be required for the wait. The other side here is how the respective apps handle the support.

Take Plex for example. This app has been updated in the Play Store and the “what’s new” section details “official Chromecast support.” But there is a catch. For now the Plex support is for video with music and images promised as “coming soon.” The other aspect is the availability. The Chromecast support for Plex requires a Plex Pass subscription which will set you back $3.99 on a monthly basis.

  1. Does anyone know if I can get Chromecast to work with Netflix from another country? I found that Chromecast does not work if I change the IP Address to a country other than the US.
