C Spire Wireless has officially announced their upcoming LTE expansion, which will arrive as good news for those in select markets in Alabama and Florida. The C Spire LTE service will be rolling out for those in 15 south Alabama cities and six northwest Florida cities. The carrier has yet to announce a specific launch date for these new markets and instead have opted to give a general sounding sometime "this fall."
That being said, it seems likely we will hear more about this roll out before the coverage actually goes live. In the meantime though, lets break down those locations beginning first with Alabama. That coverage will include the counties of Mobile and Baldwin. Specifically, the 15 cities include Mobile, Prichard, Saraland, Satsuma, Chickasaw, Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores, Loxley, Orange Beach, Summerdale, Robertsdale, Silverhill and Spanish Fort.
Shifting away from Alabama and into Florida and we have coverage that touches on four counties. The city list includes Gulf Breeze, Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Mary Esther, Cinco Bayou and Miramar Beach. Taking a step back and looking at the big picture here. C Spire has said this new LTE coverage will be for nearly 3,000 square miles which includes a population of 687,000 and 146 cell sites.
Touching back on the topic of when the coverage will arrive. Along with the general mention of this fall, C Spire has said that "most of the area is expected to have the new service in November with some areas activated later in the year." While that is probably not what everyone wanted to hear, at least there was some sort of a date given.
All that being said, this certainly sounds like good news for C Spire customers living in any of those markets. If nothing else, this longer lead time for availability could provide the time needed to set aside some cash for a smartphone upgrade. After all, once 4G LTE is available, we suspect there will be more than a few looking to upgrade.
