BlackBerry has always been reliable when it comes to releasing updates for its latest smartphones. There’s only the BlackBerry PRIV in the limelight so the company really has no excuse not to be on time. The latest update brings a number of improvements on the camera especially. So before BlackBerry announces the “Hamburg” and “Rome” mid-range devices, enjoy the PRIV’s software maintenance and the major app updates.

The BlackBerry PRIV‘s Camera app is getting some advanced shooting controls. You can now set a mode with advanced manual controls so you can use various settings like white balance, exposure compensation (EV), focus, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity. Some keyboard shortcuts have been added or updated too. To change an active setting, swipe vertically on the keyboard. To adjust the current active setting, swipe horizontally. Returning the active settings to Auto is possible just by pressing the ‘A’ key or holding it for a few seconds. It’s also easier to take a picture now. Just click on the spacebar.

BlackBerry also added support for new languages like Vietnamese and Korean Hangul. If you want to change the currency on your phone, look for the the user control key. As expected, other enhancements on autocorrect and predictions have been made as well. Here are some control keyboard shortcuts that can be used on the BlackBerry Priv: CTRL + B (Bold), CTRL + U (Underline), CTRL + I (Italic), Ctrl + Z (Undo), Ctrl + Y (Redo), Ctrl + X (Cut), Ctrl + C (Copy), and Ctrl + V (Paste). Actually, these are the standard shortcuts we already know and use on desktop but you can now use them on the BlackBerry Priv.

The update should be available now so feel free to check Google Play store. Update the app by clicking on “Download” when you see it on the list.

  2. Those updates really took the phone from good to great. It’s sad to see BlackBerry struggle because they’re releasing good devices (yes, including BlackBerry 10 devices) and updates. Manual controls on the camera isn’t new, but swiping across the physical keys to do so, is. Using copy and paste as well as other shortcuts isn’t new either, but BlackBerry did a good job making them easier to use. That’s something no one else is bothering to do, and thusly BlackBerry is making Android a better place. Not that consumers buying Samsung, LG, and HTC devices would understand that, and that’s too bad….. For them.
