It seems that the promised Android 4.3 update to many of Samsung‘s flagship devices is experiencing a rather tumultuous and uncertain ride. But while the update for the international model of the Samsung Galaxy S III has been put on hold indefinitely, AT&T is pushing through with the roll out for its customers.

The Android 4.3 update, aside from the usual features and improvements coming from a more recent Android OS version, brings a couple of Samsung-only benefits. Along with the introduction of the Samsung KNOX security framework, the update also updates the user interface to a newer theme and also improves on TouchWiz functionality. But what has probably really prompted the update is the added compatibility of with the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Samsung is hoping that more supported devices will boost the sales of the smartwatch, which has performed poorly or wonderfully, depending on who you believe.

Unfortunately, the update hasn’t been smooth-sailing, at least as far as the Galaxy S III is concerned. Although no issues have been reported for the Galaxy Note II, whose update also recently went out, users of international models of the Galaxy S III have been complaining about a myriad of problems, forcing Samsung to pull out the update to prevent problems from spreading further. There seems to be some rather huge difference with the US versions then, as both T-Mobile and AT&T are now rolling out the update to their customers.

The Android 4.3 update, with a build number I747UCUEMJB for the AT&T Galaxy S III SGH-I747 is being now being rolled out over the air. The update is quite big, around 623 MB, so a good Internet connection is essential. Of course, with such an update, a proper backup is also highly recommended.
