Paving the way for an impending launch, AT&T has released the hardware information for the ASUS PadFone X to whet users’ appetites. Since the rather impressive specs match everything we already know about the device, all we really need now is the actual availability date and price.

The PadFone X is a rather strange variation of ASUS‘ growing PadFone line of smartphone/tablet hybrids. Design-wise, it is similar to any and all recent PadFone devices, save the PadFone Mini, in that you dock the main smartphone half of the duo into a PadFone Station tablet in a landscape orientation. The differences, then, lie inside the device.

This PadFone is by no means weak, sporting some of the highest components, at least as of late December 2013. We have a 5-inch smartphone display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. As mentioned elsewhere, ASUS went with a 9-inch tablet dock this time that manages to cram 1920×1200 pixels. The PadFone Station also sports dual front-facing speakers for a better audio experience. A 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, unfortunately not an 801, runs the whole show, on the smartphone of course. With 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, expandable to up to 64 GB via a microSD card, this device is definitely no pushover. And with a 2,300 mAh battery on the smartphone, paired with a 4,990 mAh battery on the tablet dock, you’re ensured to have long-lasting battery life on the go.

Observing the promotional video above reveals a textured back cover. But unlike Samsung’s faux leather, ASUS seems to have gone with something that looks like sandpaper up close. Hopefully it won’t feel that way. AT&T, unfortunately, is still keeping pricing and dates under wraps, but hopefully it won’t be long now.
