As promised last week, Ubisoft has released a mobile game that ties into its hit Assassin’s Creed franchise. Unfortunately, aside from the name and a few references, Assassin’s Creed Pirates has little connection with the popular game series and might leave fans a bit dissatisfied.

To give credit where it is due, Ubisoft seems to have done an amazing job when it comes to the game’s visuals. The graphics are stunning and would probably stress out your Android device. In fact, the game does have a not so subtle hint that it is rather meant for high end smartphones and tablets.

Plot-wise, Assassin’s Creed Pirates is nothing spectacular. You are a young pirate named Alonzo Batilla, setting out to make a name for yourself in the world. Your goal is sail across the Carribean in search of, you guessed it, treasure. La Buse’s legendary lost treasure, that is. Along the way, you will encounter the warring camps of Assassins and Templars, which pretty much serves as the only direct link with other games in the franchise.

In terms of gameplay, Assassin’s Creed Pirates is nothing like those games. Instead of stealth or one on one combat, you get huge naval battles. A certain amount of strategic and tactical thinking is involved, however, as you build up your crew and arm your ship to the teeth. And the gorgeous weather effects aren’t just for show either, as storm and fog can spell your defeat. You can watch Ubisoft’s launch trailer of Assassin’s Creed Pirates below.

Assassin’s Creed Pirates is priced at $4.99, which might be a bit too much for a game you might not enjoy. Unless, of course, you are into huge ship battles. Fans of the franchise might still find themselves reaching for that Buy button just for the sake of collecting every Assassin’s Creed title there is.
