Each year the Pwn2 Own hacking contest is held to see who can hack various browsers, software and OS’ the fastest. There are money award to those that are able to hack the software in some instances. In the latest edition of the content Google put in its Chrome browser and the Android OS to see if anyone could do the deed.

Google made it through the competition with no one reportedly able to hack Chrome or Android. The same can’t be said for the iPhone 4 with the browser on the iPhone falling and the smartphone being hacked during the contest as well. Along with Android, Windows Phone 7 survived the hack contest.

Exactly what hacks were used to gain control of the devices hasn’t been announced. The Google Chrome browser was running a chrome OS Cr-48 notebook when the hackers tried to break it. It’s nice to see the OS is secure despite all the malware that has been popping up in the Android Market lately.

  1. They just can’t. They are among the most secure software available on the planet.
Also, where is the media hype on iphone 4 being hacked… entire American media is bought over by Apple’s PR department.

    • Just proves what I wrote before. Apple wastes millions to “bribe” US media, thus preventing information sharing. As far as I recall, that’s called breach of information rights or similar and is VERY MUCH punishable.Oh well, as long as they actually publish the truth I don’t care.
Android pwns iOS, mac and everything that Apple makes.

  2. I was under the impression that Chrome was undefeated because the person called upon to hack it didn’t show up, did they let someone else take a crack @ it? I also find it amazing that Android wasn’t cracked w/ the recent market issues and various rooting methods(which often take advantage of security flaws)

  3. LOL. It didn’t get hacked because nobody tried! If I park a car in the middle of New York City and nobody tries to break into it for a day, does that mean by car is burglar proof? No, it means there were better cars to be broken. And the Chrome OS is a joke. Why would you bother hacking an OS that nobody uses?

    • First of all you must be a moron. Last I checked ChromeOS is an alpha release of an unfinished product and hasn’t had years of refining such as that of Apple’s OSX or their Safari web browser which I assume you are a fanboy of due to you’re ill trained, knowledge absent, pretentious mind.

For starters the reason anybody would attempt to hack ChromeOS is that this is a contest TO DO SO! Along with all of the other OS’s that were present.

Secondly there was a little thing called a cash prize, ever heard of that? Just in case you don’t know how to use a search engine I’ll help you out http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/03/googles-paying-20-000-to-hack-chrome-any-takers/ I’m not sure if it’s just me but $20,000 is a lot of cash just for some quality time spent hacking which amounts to a lot than your Macbook Pro is worth.

Thirdly you’re calling ChromeOS a joke when Safari running on a Macbook Air was cracked in just five seconds? Also like I stated earlier this is only an alpha release of an unfinished product, not only that I doubt you have even touched a ChromeOS device so therefore have no say in the matter.

Also ChromeOS was unscathed in the competition now I’m not sure if you know what unscathed means but let me grab you the dictionary definition of it for good measure “Unscathed: [uhn-skeythd]
      –adjective
not scathed; unharmed; uninjured: She survived the accident unscathed.” Which means all of your information is far safer on ChromeOS which is essentially the Chrome web browser.

On that note take your pathetic self absorbed mindset and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.

  4. True, no one tried to hack Chrome – but that was because the registered hacker backed out because he knew he had not come up with an exploit. Certainly there are enough good hackers out there that if any thought they could exploit Chrome, you would think they would have had a go at it rather than the other targets, because of the extra $20,000 bounty that Google had offered.

  5. LOL!! And another big LOL! Apple wastes millions on advertisement and gets 0 results in terms of safety and functionality. iPhone, iPad and other mobile stuff they made so far have all failed miserably in almost every department. Android, despite the fact it’s only been on the market a decade shorter, proved far more reliable and functional. I don’t even want to start talking about Chrome and Chrome OS. A piece of advice to Apple: Either start making things that are worth the money, or just shut down the company, because Apple vs Google.. Hmm, Titan wins, and it’s not Apple..

  6. why would you want to earn 20000$ ??? and let the google or whatever fix it.
if you can hack a browser and earn so much more….. i bet there would be several people willing to pay 10.000 or more just to know it.
are you people even thinking straight?

if your a real hacker you try to maintain a low profile. so like NOT going to these hack and wank party’s and show off and make a big name + google fixing the security flaws.

    it’s called common sence.
