Google’s Android Os has found its way into all sorts of devices from smartphones to set-top boxes and eReaders. The operating system is also now being used to power a battlefield network for Raytheon called RATS.

RATS stands for Raytheon Android Tactical System and makes use of inexpensive terminals powered by Android that connect soldiers in the field with other soldiers and military assets. The RATS is sort of like a military social network where other soldiers can be tracked in real time.

It sounds like wide use of the system could help prevent friendly fire incidents. Raytheon has been working on RATS for over two years and the system could see deployment within two months. I wonder how the system will be secured against falling into enemy hands.
