According to a report from Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, Android is destined to become the second most used smartphone OS by 2012. If that comes true, Android would be ahead of Apple, Microsoft, and RIM in terms of OS users.

Right now Android has about 3% of the market but the analyst expects that number to grow to 14.5% in the next three years. That’s not hard to imagine considering how many Android devices are being introduced this year.

Dulaney predicts that Symbian would still be tops in the mobile phone OS realm with 39% of the market with the iPhone OS in third. I wonder how these numbers will be affected if the exclusive deals with carriers for the iPhone end.
