According to a new study, the Android Market has passed Apple iTunes in offering more free applications for smartphones and tablets. Google’s Android Market offers 134,342 free applications while Apple has about 13,000 fewer. The study also predicts that within five months, the Android Market will be the largest applications store, period, followed by iTunes and the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. What’s interesting is that Blackberry, which once dominated the smartphone category is now a distance 4th, only beating out Nokia’s Ovi Store.

And with the recent addition of the Amazon App Store for Android, Blackberry’s 4th place position is likely to slip even further. Amazon’s Android AppStore has fantastic features include one-click checkout, free app of the day, and a virtual Android interface to test drive apps. And Amazon is also sweetening the deal, as we mentioned last week, but offering $25 in AppStore credit with the purchase of select Android handsets.

There is one bright spot in the study for Blackberry though. Hitching a ride on the Android wave, well, sort of, Blackberry is predicted to join Google as mounting some serious competition in the tablet market. That makes Apple’s dominance in tablets short lived at about a year. And with 58% of the most popular publishers developing apps for non-Apple products, it’s easy to see why both companies have reason to smile.

    • 350,000 Android activations per day around the world. That’s why.
Plus if you’re app is absolutely awesome like the top free ones on the Android Market you’re bound to make money off by advertisement alone.

More customers = more downloads. More (accidental?) clicks. Its win win

      • If more customers=more downloads then why are so many developers not making money on Android?

  1. So lets get this straight google makes money off of Android, The cell phones makers make money off of Android, even consumer make money of off Android and the software developers make money???? That is the point software developers are not making money. You still make more money building for IPhone and Windows Phone. As a business opportunity I could not feed my family on my Android app return unless they could live on air. Google needs to do something about this. No more Android apps for me until they start promoting to pay for apps. Which I doubt. Developers are starting to questions the returns.

    • I’m not an expert or anything but don’t developers generally make the same app for all the major platforms? I imagine there are compensations with the sheer number of Android devices out there, but you’re right – it’s not for those who want to make a quick buck!

  3. Personally I have ~15 apps for android. But no one can make revenue to cover basic cost… Crazy. Now I am thinking if iOs is more suitable. At least some guys will pay for your effort.

Ad…1000 impressions for US$0.1x. Imagine you are serving 1,000,000 ad impressions per day, you are only getting US$1×0. How can one survive under such situation.

Paid model? i don’t think people like to pay for apps. What’s worse is the google checkout always occurs payment problem. I have to contact support for months. They delay my payment month by month. Asking me to wait for months…. This is the google way.

Well, it may be due to our marketing performance.

  4. The Android App Store is a mess and offers very little for developers to make money. I make 4x the amount on iOS vs Android because Apple understands makering your apps, Google does not.

Time and time again I see the One hit wonder Google fall short on a project because of the sloppy job they did with it from the start.

Developers need to focus efforts on other opps until google can get there act together with the Android App Store.

No money to be made for paid.
