Mobile gaming is certainly fun, but can be limiting. The lack of hardware controls is sometimes frustrating, as games like Grand Theft Auto are much better with dedicated controls. Devices like a PS Vita are fun, but require yet another device to tote around. Plus, we don’t get all the open source fun of Android. Consoles like Ouya or Gamestick are fun, but tie us to the living room. NVIDIA’s Shield is great, but a touch bulky, and best used as a secondary device.

If mobile gaming is your focus, device maker JXD might have something you’ll like. They are reported to be (finally) ready to release their S5800 game phone. In our eyes, it’s like a PS Vita that can make calls. It plays Android games, and support s a few emulators for those more in-depth games you want to play on the go. The specs, which should be considered final:

  • 5 inch, 960 x 540 pixel IPS display
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0
  • MediaTek MTK6582 ARM Cortex-A7 quad-core processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of built-in storage
  • 5MP rear camera and 0.3MP front-facing camera
  • microSD card slot, supporting up to 32GB storage
  • Android 4.2
  • Capacitive touch panel with 5-point multitouch
  • 2G and 3G GSM and WCDMA cellular connectivity
  • GPS
  • 3000mAh battery

Clearly nothing earth shattering when considering it as a phone, but as a standalone gaming device that can make calls — not so bad. Liliputing found that online retailer WillGoo has it listed already, though it’s listed as “Sold Out”, which we take as a placeholder for “coming soon”, though the launch date isn’t noted. We also don’t get official details on pricing, which for a device like this, is truly make or break.
