Android at the top in mobile game sales

28 August 2009 by Shane McGlaun

Mobile phones are becoming very competent and popular mobile gaming platforms. According to the largest third party application store, mobile games were 25% of all apps sold for the first half of 2009. That is a 6% increase from 2008.

According to Handango’s report, Android was one of the most popular gaming platforms for mobile devices. Games in the Android catalog accounted for a larger percentage of sales than they did in other smartphone catalogs.

Android isn’t alone in being a popular gaming platform. Handango also said that RIM’s Blackberry line was popular with mobile gamers, 36% of all apps sold for the device were games. The growth of mobile gaming is no surprise to me. We always have our phones on us for the most part and games are a great way to kill some time.

  1. Favorite game: Robo Defense
  2. Pretty good news, although I personally haven't found too many games worth buying/keeping, I only have a few games like Bonsai Blast, the Papi games, Zombie Run, and I think Pac Man from forever ago. But hey, if anyone can suggest some awesome games, I'll be willing to check them out, I need something with more depth.
  3. fav. games?

I Co-Sign This To The Fullest Extent And I'd Add GameBoid, Nesdroid, Snesdroid, And Beatdown Boxing.
  5. IMO I think the "games" on Android kinda stink........I'm pretty casual with games but I do enjoy a good game from time to time. I would have thought that the *cough!* iphone games would have sold more. They do have that Air Traffic Control game.
  6. yeah android games are pretty stinky. i watch my friend play his iphone games and i'm envious.
if game sales are high i think it's a fluke of people searching for a decent game with good visuals. i've gone through at least 100 games only to uninstall them disappointed.
  7. Check out jewellust I think its probably the most profesionally executed game for android.

    The graphics are great

Armadillo roll has cool graphics but gameplay isn't much

Well iPhone/iPod Touch did have a head start both in time, and installed base. The developers are still mostly focused on the iPhone/iPod Touch (for good reasons). Hopefully this changes when the next batch of Android phones come out and the installed base of Android drastically increases.

I don't think Android is doing too bad for a new platform, it's already giving Blackberry, WinMo, and Symbian a run for their money. It's probably the only OS that has a chance of overtaking the iPhone OS.
  9. IMO, the G1 kinda sucks for gaming.

Your only control options are touchscreen, trakball or keyboard... all of which are pretty clunky.

Look at a PSP, or even a sidekick (which, i hate to say, had better games back in 2007 than the g1 does now)

they are setup for two handed control with gaming.

We need an android device with a good Dpad on the opposite side of the trakball, and some corner buttons too..
  10. lol if u want a portable game system maybe you should get a PlayStation PORTABLE

cell phones are not meant to be stand alone gaming systems they are a phone first and everything else is a plus
  11. For me, games are not a huge draw. Stopcrazyapp did mention a good point, Given the amount of time Android has been around compared to the leader I guess they are doing pretty good. One other thing, If I really wanted hardcore (good) games I would have gotten a device that was centered around that Android (at least for now) is not game centric.

    A mile stone for Android
  12. Imagine if good games were available...
  13. don't get me wrong i like my android phone. i just don't think the title of the article is valid.
there is no way android games are better than iphone games. it's very misleading.

That argument would be somewhat valid if it wasn't for the fact that the iPhone has decent games yet it only has touchscreen. Personally all I need is emulators. GBA is one of the most succesful gaming platforms ever and has games that trump the best games that any mobile platform has to offer.
  15. You are weeping about a lack of cool games on Android. It's not a true. There are few games but some are simply hard to find on android market. Tiki said Jewellust has nice graphics. It's nothing in comparison with e.g Colorix game which is my favorite .
  16. Ok so clearly this doesn't compare directly with PSP or a really high end mobile system like that, but I wanted to show you guys what we (Battery Powered Games) have been able to do with the G1 so far.

Here's a video of our latest game, Light Racer 3D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoeuLShzkXg

We're starting on a new one that should have better graphics yet. We've also figured out some really interesting gameplay options using the combo of the touch screen and the buttons for two-handed play.

I'm hoping that our next few titles will really show off the graphics capabilities of the phone and show how good gameplay can get for Android.

BTW - If you guys have suggestions for games or ideas on how to use the phone better for playability, please let me know.

    Thanks!
