Android 1.6 is currently being pushed out to T-Mobile USA subscribers, the carrier has confirmed, with myTouch 3G and G1 users told to expect a message on their handset alerting them to the new OS version.  Delivered as an OTA (over the air) update, OS 1.6 brings with it a refresh of the Android Market – complete with screenshots and more information – and a new, universal search feature.

“The rollout of Android 1.6 (Donut) to T-Mobile’s G1 and myTouch 3G customers is now underway. The over-the-air update will be delivered to all G1 and myTouch customers in the coming days.” T-Mobile USA statement

OS 1.6 also supports more screen resolutions, beyond the native HVGA of current handsets, as well as CDMA devices.  However those improvements won’t make any difference to either the myTouch 3G (aka the HTC Magic) or the T-Mobile G1.  The update comes shortly after HTC updated their developers’ handset with a build of 1.6, intended for coders to test their wares on the newly refreshed OS.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to prematurely trigger the new software, owners can only wait for their phones to flag up the update.  We’d be interested in hearing how Android Community users are finding OS 1.6, so let us know in the comments if your device has updated.

  1. Anyone have Donut available for manual installation yet?
  2. Will rooted phones with CM rom receive an update? Or do we have to wait until CM makes a rom?
  3. If you a Cyanogen Modded phone, OTA updates are disabled, so if you want to taste the donut, you could try the experimental Cyanogen mod or wait to see how well the little fracas with Google works out. It might be some time before he is able to release an update that complies with their requirements.

As an alternative, you could unroot your phone and get the official OTA update.

depending on the CM version you're running you've had it for a while ...

Thanks, I dont mind waiting. From what I've read, there's really not that much appeal to the stock donut release to make me un-root and then re-root when CM comes out with his release. It's not like there's flash support or anything new and exiting...

CyanogenMod 4.1.11.1 is donut ! plus all the extra cyanogen goodies !
  7. Got mine an hour ago.. Camera interface is better (seems faster). Market is better which I already knew about. The universal search doesn't seem to be working for me as I expected to..maybe next update?
  8. wow i been really out of the game as far as android, came back from a trip and saw the cyan bad news and just lost interest in android

its good that they are pushing the 1.6 update sooner than anticipated
  9. Just got my Donut update
  10. i just got my 1.6 update and the YouTube app and Amazon MP3 app no longer work. I click on them and i get a pop up that says that "Application is not installed on your phone". anyone else seeing this?
  11. in case you haven't figured it out yet...

the applications have changed. if you used to have it on your home screen, that link to the application no longer works. just go to your main container and you will see the new applications. just replace the old ones.
  12. ah... wow. dont i feel dumb now... thanks.
  13. Got mine yesterday.

    1 comment so far,

Google mapping is worse. Location history for directions is gone now. You used to be able to choose History, and then a menu with all your previous locations that you may have used as a start or finish location were there. That appears to be gone now, making, IMHO, the Mapping function much less useful.
  14. Got mine yesterday. Have not had a chance to check alot of it out. But so far the market place is great and the Google search with voice is awesome. I love the fact that you can use it for calling contacts and also it seems to me to be very accurate.
  15. Has anyone else noticed a bug where new apps don't download/install ? I uploaded an update to my app and it doesn't download/install to my 1.6 updated firmware for some reason.
  16. I got 1.6 today (10/05/09) and so far things look good. The Market sure looks better. The email app now correctly lists the number of msgs to be read (used to just count up and up and up). The search box on the home screen has changed slightly. Still looking for other changes. Now if they would do something about the voice dial sensitivity and calendar sync prefs. Being able to search the app store online would be nice too!
  17. Like the look of the market and YouTube but have had problems with browser. I hit the home button to do something else briefly then returned to browser to resume what I was doing previously and it returned to my default homepage and it also crashed completely on me once. Phone search seems pointless to me.
  18. When my phone began automatically upgrading, I was excited in anticipating what new features and looks the newer version had to offer. As soon as it was done I was severely disappointed. It conflicted with my aHome desktop app causing it to continuously force close and do absolutely nothing more. I had to call T-Mobile from another phone so they could walk me through a hard reset. After losing quite a few important memos linked to the apps I lost from the reset, I had to begin work. I view YouTube Videos for a living. I was quickly disappointed again because my YouTube app (the new one) plays nothing but audio for about 30 seconds and then force closes. So now I have to sit at home in front of my desktop to work as compared to not touching my computer at all because I used to do my work fun and leisure all from my phone anywhere and anytime. I wish I could no longer recieve "updates" if it's going to downgrade my phone. If you look at the Android Market from the phone and read the comments posted after Oct 4th you will see hundreds of thousands of people just as frustrated with all the app conflicts as myself. In my opinion all the phone needed was a flashplayer for web browsing and I would love my G1 even more. Now I hate my brick. The new bells and whistles have wrecked my phone and rendered it useless to me. Now if I want an upgrade....I'm gonna go get an iPhone.
  19. Initially, there are some good features, like the global search and voice-activated search (too much fun!). However, the new 1.6 is incompatible with the fine Roadsync program to synchronize with Microsoft Exchange Server, causing a T-Mobile tech to have to walk me through a complete data wipe. I would not be surprised to see other incompatibilities.

The tech support at T Mobile are idiots!

There is a way to restart your phone in safe mode, which would have allowed you to get to the Android Home screen, and delete aHome (I believe there's an update compatable with 1.6, but regardless...)

At least you wouldn't have deleted all of your info!

As for YouTube, on my myTouch, the new YouTube app is MUCH better then the previous one. Try turning off your phone, remove the battery for about a minute, then reinsert the battery and restart it.

I had a problem where Album cover art wasn't showing up after I updated to 1.6, but after turning off the phone and removing the battery then restarting, it's now working fine.

On the myTouch, the phone is MUCH snappier now, almost no force quits. Yea, some apps aren't compatable with the update, but they are few and are quickly getting updated. (Only one I really missed was Toggle Settings, and it's now been updated and improved.

Anyways, sorry you're having all of these problems. Try restarting the phone, it often solves alot of issues.
  21. Thank you for your advice. It fixed my problem immediately. I know nothing about gizmos and gadgets, I'm simply a user. thanks friend
