Looks like Google is busy at work investigating the 3G issues with the Nexus One that a lot of people are experiencing. Their results showed that the issue is weak T-Mobile 3G coverage. They also found a bug in the software and are currently testing a patch that should fix the issue. The patch will come in the form of an OTA and could be released as early as next week.

Picture is from http://www.wayoflife.org/database/youlegalist.html

Google may be on to something. If you take into account that T-Mobile is fairly new to the 3G arena and they do have the smallest 3G coverage out of the big 4 carriers. But this by no means explains how a G1 can be right next to a Nexus One and the G1 has 3G while the Nexus doesn’t. I personally think it’s a software issue but you be the judge. I wonder how T-Mobile feels about being blamed by their partner. Especially since T-Mobile was willing to step in and provide so support for a device that doesn’t have their branding and is not even in their stores.

Modding Android handsets has been made particularly easy thanks to their open-source software, and so it’s almost a surprise that it’s taken this long to see integration with that other hacker’s delight, the Arduino microprocessor board. Over at Instructables there’s a guide that explains exactly how to connect a rooted T-Mobile G1 up to the Arduino, potentially allowing for ready access to the handset’s 3G, camera, microphone, speaker and other functionality from whatever hobby electronics you hook up.

It’s the handiwork of Tim Heath and Ryan Hickman, who have produced the Python scripts which allow the G1 to communicate with the Arduino board. The basic functionality turns an LED on and off, but of course the expectation is that electronics tinkerers will use the system to develop wirelessly-connected robotics, remote telepresence systems and generally interface with other external hardware.

Truphone have updated their Android VoIP app to support the Google Nexus One. The software – Truphone v3.0.2 – now supports the Nexus One, T-Mobile Pulse, HTC G1, Hero and Magic, and offers free WiFi VoIP calls between Truphone users as well as to Google Talk and Skype accounts.

There’s also an IM client baked into Truphone, which supports Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and AIM accounts, and as with other VoIP systems we’ve seen they’ll happily take your cash in return for lower cost international calls. WiFi VoIP is a relatively new addition to Truphone; when the app first arrived for Android it routed calls over a regular call.

Unfortunately this latest version has some issues too, though only if you’re a Google Voice user. Gear Diary report that, while they had Truphone installed, Google Voice regularly crashed and their Nexus One ran slower than usual and suffered periodic lock-ups; the issue was fixed when Truphone was removed.

Press Release:

Truphone First to Bring Wi-Fi Calling To Nexus One

Truphone’s new Android application updated to operate on Google’s new device
LONDON – 22 January 2010 — Hot on the heels of the release of Truphone’s VoIP enabled Truphone for Android application earlier this month, Truphone, the next generation global mobile operator, today announces that it is the first company to provide Wi-Fi calling on the Nexus One device from Google.

Following collaboration with Google, Truphone is pleased to announce that from today Truphone for Android is compatible with the Nexus One.

In addition to compatibility with the Nexus One, the update (version 3.0.2), ensures compatibility with the T-Mobile Pulse, meaning that Truphone is now Wi- Fi compatible with a total of five Android devices (see original release for list)

Karl Good, Director of Applications for Truphone said: “Google has been very helpful in working with the Truphone team to allow us to provide our award- winning solution to the growing number of Nexus One owners. Once again it is a testament to Truphone that we are the first to be able to offer this technology to consumers.”

Truphone for Android (version 3.0.2), is available now as a free download in the Android Market.

Hello fellow AndroidCommunity members, welcome, and Happy New Year 2010! We are so excited for the new Android devices that will make their way into our hands this year. We also hope to have great news on all the upcoming gadgets at CES. It seems like the most exciting news happened until the end of 2009, but let’s start our AC highlights from the beginning of said year, shall we?

Let’s Begin with the First HTC Handsets Making Android History

One of the most important things that happened at the beginning of 2009 was the leaked info on HTC’s Android-powered Hero. Also, coder Luke Hutchison, put together a multitouch hack for the G1. Users of the G1 also received the RC-33 update, with support for Google’s Latitude and voice-controlled searching. Paid apps finally made it to the Android Market, and the second Android-based smartphone; the HTC Magic, was officially announced by HTC and Vodafone. The HTC Dream got a March 15th release date on Orange France, while Vodafone UK’s site had confirmed the HTC Magic launch during April 2009.

And who doesn’t remember when Vic Gundotra took to the stage to unveil GMail offline, but may have also inadvertently announced the T-Mobile G2/HTC Magic. This apparently became obvious when an HTC handset – the Magic – passed the FCC bearing T-Mobile USA branding. Not easy to forget were also the first shots of the HTC Hero in the wild, without the awful pink, as well as the official T-Mobile USA announcement of their second Android handset; the myTouch 3G. And while Chris was doing the unboxing video of the Vodafone HTC Magic, Rogers Wireless was making the announcement of the HTC Dream (aka T-Mobile G1) and the HTC Magic to the Canadian market on June 2nd.

By the end of May, Vincent was happily playing with a free Google IO 2009 HTC Android phone, check the unboxing video and pictures here. The very next day, Steven alerted us of many G1 owners getting the Android 1.5 (Cupcake) update for their devices. Then, out of the blue, a promo video for the HTC Hero appeared online. Latitude and Voice Search for Android Google Maps were upgraded, and Transit directions came along. A few days later, HTC was making news again, Chris was at a press event in London, where the company announced its third Android smartphone; the HTC Hero. T-Mobile didn’t want to be left out, so they announced a myTouch 3G media event for July 8th.

In August, the myTouch 3G was available at T-Mobile for $199.99 with a new 2-year contract. HTC also unveiled a low-cost entry-level Android handset called the Tattoo in September. Fast forward to October, and the news get juicier; the Sprint HTC Hero launches on Oct. 12th, for $179.99 with a 2-year contract and a $100 rebate. The HTC Tattoo gets unboxed & played with at SlashGear the next morning.

Other Phones and a Couple of HTCs Android Powered

Sony Ericsson’s phone, the XPERIA codenamed Rachael, appears on some “internal documents”, and just a few days later, shots of the slick Sony Ericsson Android interface leaked on youtube. In September, the Samsung i7500 Galaxy arrived to Europe via O2, and the LG Etna was caught at a Vodafone stand, and we later found out, that it was the LG GW620. Motorola UK confirmed the Motorola DEXT – Motorola CLIQ outside of the US – to go on sale through carrier Orange from early October, and through T-Mobile USA network in Q4 2009.

T-Mobile in the UK got the Android Huawei Pulse for prepay service, and the Acer A1 Android powered smartphone appeared for a while at retailer Expansys. Samsung also introduced an Android handset; the Behold II, with carrier T-Mobile, a leaked document from Sam’s reported on the DROID by Motorola to be ready by the holidays, and to top it all off, Android 1.6 went OTA to G1 and myTouch 3G users on T-Mobile.

Sprint gets another Android phone; the Samsung Moment, meanwhile the Motorola CLIQ gets a full SlashGear review, and an early build of Android 2.0 Eclair leaked, giving us a glance into the future. From Russia with love, the little brother of the Samsung Galaxy I7500; the Galaxy Spica gets announced. And the Android-based Acer Liquid A1 goes up for sale in the UK on December.

At the end of 2009 the world saw one of the hottest phones come to life, yes, the DROID by Motorola, sold by Big Red (Verizon), which came packed with Android 2.0. But that wasn’t the only Android handset that Verizon got, they also got the HTC Eris. The DROID went to Europe and change its name to be the MILESTONE, but it wasn’t able to use the Google Maps Navigation Beta update, since it was for the US only. Another hot Android phone that begun to caught our attention was the Sony Ericsson’s Rachel/XPERIA 10, only to be dethroned by the latest, hottest and baddest of the Android phones; the Google Nexus One. Which is still giving a lot to talk about, but we hope to get more info on this great handset in a couple of days.

Well folks, there you have it, yes, there were other Android devices during the year 2009, but we tried to keep it just on the smartphone side, since that’s the main subject with Google’s free OS. Anyway, one of the most sought after MIDs; the Camangi, ended up as a close fail in the eyes of some of its buyers. So, fellow AC members, what were your Android highlights for 2009? Let us know in the comments area.

The “Android press gathering” that Google announced for January 5th is looking more interesting as the date closes in on us. And now, it appears that a tipster sent a couple of screenshots to Gizmodo, which supposedly confirm that Google will be in fact, selling the Nexus One Android phone unlocked.

Google will sell the Nexus One for $530 unsubsidized, but if you want to pay less for this Android handset, you’ll have to sign up for a 2 year agreement with T-Mobile and pay only $180 for the phone. But if you cancel the agreement within 120 days of the purchase, you’ll have to pay the difference of the total cost of the phone, which is about $350 in this case, or you can also return the phone to Google.

It appears that T-Mobile is offering only one rate plan: $39.99 Even More + Text + Web for $79.99 total. And existing customers cannot keep their plan if they want a subsidized phone, which means that they have to change to the one plan, and only accounts with one single line will be able to do this. But you can buy the $530 unlocked version, and save money over the 2 years if you already have a cheaper plan.

You must shell out the $530 for the unlocked version if you have a family plan, Flexpay, SmartAccess or KidConnect. If you like to buy more than 1 Nexus One phone, the limit is 5 per Google account. And apparently, there is language in the agreement for shipping outside the US. Also, Google will call this handset, the Nexus One, and not the Google Phone, and the Terms of Sale make sure you acknowledged that HTC is the manufacturer, and not Google.

What do you think folks? If you like to join the discussion on this matter, head on to our forums here.

The picture above comes to us via BGR, and shows you how thin is this new Android smartphone compared to the G1. Obviously, many smartphones out there are thinner than the G1, but hey, it’s all good. No word on how thin it actually is, but we believe it must be around 10mm thick. They also say it has a crisp, high resolution display, which it has to be, AMOLED displays are better than LCDs.

You will find two more pictures of this great looking phone running Android 2.1, as well as a video with the boot animation for it. Don’t forget to let us know in the comments area what you like/dislike about this awesome looking smartphone. Enjoy!

Recently, the folks over at xda-developers.com had figured out a way to make Google Maps Navigation Beta to work on a T-Mobile G1 by hacking into it. This time Google has officially announced that those who are using Android 1.6 or higher will be able to use Google Navigation Maps.

As you already know, Google Maps Navigation is an internet-connected GPS system with voice guidance and automatic rerouting, that runs off your mobile phone. On this update you’ll find the new Layers feature, which lets you overlay geographical information on the map. You can also view My Maps, Transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places, and more.

Google wants you to have a happy Thanksgiving, so if you are traveling, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of Google Maps Navigation in your car. Is still missing some 2.0 features, and it still works only in the US, but many will be happy to have this helpful feature on their Android phones. Enjoy!

As you all know by now, the Verizon DROID by Motorola has Google Maps Navigation Beta, which gives its users turn-by-turn directions, vocal prompts, speech-recognition and more. Well, if you have a T-Mobile G1 and can’t help to feel a little jealous, okay, lets face it, maybe more than just a little. Do not fret, you may have a shot at this new Google GPS app.

Apparently the folks over at xda-developers.com have figured out a way to make Google Maps Navigation Beta to work on the T-Mobile G1. Although Android 2.0 is only on the Motorola DROID, and still evading all other phones, the xda-developers have worked out this hack for you; G1 users.

Google Maps Navigation Beta only works in the US, so have in mind that this hack might not work with those G1 phones outside the States. If you like to know more about it, or even apply this hack to your G1, hit the link on the paragraph above to see how it is done. But remember to be careful and try this and any other hack at your own risk.

The new Behold II Android smartphone from Samsung has debuted as a T-Mobile exclusive. T-Mobile is really padding its line with Android devices since the G1 first launched a while back. The new Android phone uses the Samsung TouchWiz interface.

TouchWiz allows the user to easily customize the homepage with apps and widgets to give fast and easy access to the most used functions of the phone. The device operates on the T-Mobile 3G network and as a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen.

That AMOLED screen should help provide better battery life along with crisp colors and wide viewing angles. The handset also has a 5MP camera with flash, five shooting modes, and video recording capability. GPS, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot are featured as well.

Android 1.6 is currently being pushed out to T-Mobile USA subscribers, the carrier has confirmed, with myTouch 3G and G1 users told to expect a message on their handset alerting them to the new OS version. Delivered as an OTA (over the air) update, OS 1.6 brings with it a refresh of the Android Market – complete with screenshots and more information – and a new, universal search feature.

“The rollout of Android 1.6 (Donut) to T-Mobile’s G1 and myTouch 3G customers is now underway. The over-the-air update will be delivered to all G1 and myTouch customers in the coming days.” T-Mobile USA statement

OS 1.6 also supports more screen resolutions, beyond the native HVGA of current handsets, as well as CDMA devices. However those improvements won’t make any difference to either the myTouch 3G (aka the HTC Magic) or the T-Mobile G1. The update comes shortly after HTC updated their developers’ handset with a build of 1.6, intended for coders to test their wares on the newly refreshed OS.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to prematurely trigger the new software, owners can only wait for their phones to flag up the update. We’d be interested in hearing how Android Community users are finding OS 1.6, so let us know in the comments if your device has updated.

Android has been on the market for a year now and according to the San Francisco Chronicle the Os is still “not there yet.” With all the Android handsets and other devices being launched onto the market and the buzz that Android devices are creating it is hard to see where the OS is failing though it still needs a few improvements.

On the market today, there is the original G1 from T-Mobile that sold a million units the first month and now we have the myTouch 3G and a slew of devices form HTC and Motorola. The OS has a strong developer community and many of the major carriers are offering Android devices at home and abroad.

It seems that Android is doing well, the OS isn’t as popular as Windows mobile or the iPhone in terms of the number of handsets on the market, but it’s popular. Android isn’t perfect yet, but it is doing well.

In the immortal words of Scooby Doo — rot-row. Apparently, users of the T-Mobile G1 may run into a big problem updating their device. PC World reports that the G1 may be unable to get significant updates in the future because its internal flash storage is nearly full already.

“As much as I’m hoping that it’ll be possible to somehow continue updating the G1, I can’t promise anything,” Jean-Baptiste Queru, a software engineer at Google, wrote on Twitter. “We knew that internal flash space was going to be very tight on the G1 and we kept the system partition tight on purpose.”

Naturally, T-Mobile denies that the G1 will be unable to get future updates and says that it plans to introduce updates to the software in the future. The thing that some wonder is if G1 users will be able to get big OS updates, or if the updates will be limited to smaller security patches and bug fixes.

Engineer’s sketches of the upcoming Motorola Morrison have leaked, ahead of what’s presumed to be the budget Android handset’s Holiday 2009 launch. A sliding QWERTY touchscreen device, the Morrison is expected to carry a roughly $100 price tag when it lands on T-Mobile USA later in the year.

The handset is expected to have triband WCDMA 900/1700/2100 support, together with quadband GSM, as well as stereo Bluetooth and a speakerphone. There is some difference between the controls of the Morrison in this image and in leaked photos of the handset; the sketch appears to show hardware buttons beneath the phone’s touchscreen, while leaked prototype shots suggest touch-sensitive keys instead.

T-Mobile USA are believed to be slotting the Morrison in underneath the G1. The device was first spotted on a leaked roadmap back in May.

Android got off to an admittedly rocky start when it first debuted on the T-Mobile G1. Since then the OS has proved to be popular and a strong contender in the marketplace. More phones are being introduced that run Android than most other operating systems right now.

Android is also starting to gain ground on the class leading iPhone for apps according to Flurry. According to the research firm the iPhone owns79% of the applications market on a platform basis while Android holds 15% of the market and Blackberry holds a mere 3%.

The iPhone has 74% of the developers working on its platform compared to 22% of them working on Android and a scant 3% working on Blackberry apps. The company also says that Android users are more loyal than those using the iPhone are. Application user retention on Android devices is 83% within 30 days and only 63% for iPhone users after the same period. Android users are also more heavily using apps than those on the iPhone are.

MIPS Technologies has announced that it is developing extensions for Android that will allow the OS to support HD video displays. The extension will allow Android to be ported to devices like Blu-ray players, HDTVs, and Set-top boxes.

It looks like Google’s Android OS is set to become one of the defacto standard OS’ for all sorts of items in a way that Windows CE was never able to do. A MIPS partner has plans to demo a version of Android supporting HD content on August 27.

Mentor Graphics has announced that it is extending the Android mobile applications platform to support Freescale QorlQ and PowerQUICC III processors. These processors are built on Freescale Power Architecture technology.

The move was made possible by Mentor Graphics’ purchase of Embedded Alley Development System. Support for the new hardware opens Android up to numerous other industries and applications from networking and storage to printing and imaging and much more. The new development system will be available in August.

Philips has an Android device that has leaked onto the Web from China. The details are scant, but the device is called the V808 and will run Android.

The other scant details that we know include a 3.2-inch HVGA screen and a 3.2-megapixel camera with video recording capability. The leaked photos don’t show the device powered up either so there are no more specs to glean at this time.

BusinessWeek reports that this summer and fall will mark Android becoming a true contender in the smartphone war against the iPhone and devices from Nokia and other smartphone makers. The new crop of handsets coming to market like the HTC Hero are much more robust feature wise and will show Android in the best light.

BusinessWeek reports that the myTouch it is testing is much better than the original G1 and works very well. The publication also figures that Google should be able to do well in the software game, one of the most important aspects of the mobile phone market.

T-Mobile UK have reconfirmed that they will be offering the HTC Hero, although in their line-up it will be known as the T-Mobile G2 Touch and not the G1Touch as originally suggested. Set to hit the market later in July, according to the carrier’s Twitter account, details of the handset’s price and tariffs are yet to be confirmed by an official press release.

The carrier will go head to head with rival Orange, who are also offering the Hero (in their case with its original name). Since Orange are pricing the Android smartphone from free with a new two-year agreement, it seems likely that T-Mobile UK will do the same.

The news comes as T-Mobile USA revealed this week that they have no plans to offer the HTC Hero on their side of the Atlantic. Speaking at the launch of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G (aka the HTC Magic), CTO Cole Brodman said the Hero was not on their US radar.

Update: T-Mobile UK have confirmed that the G2Touch will be free with a new 18-month contract at £40 per month; the tariff will be one of their Flext schemes, offering £225-worth of credit per month to be used as the subscriber sees fit.
