LastFMLogoLast.fm has announced the availability of their internet radio streaming app on the Android platform.  It is available in the Android Market now for download, or by clicking here.

Similar to Pandora radio, Last.fm learns your music tastes as you listen, and suggests new music that it thinks you may like by inserting songs in between your old favorites.  The entire service is backed by the Last.fm website with access to information about everything you hear on the streaming stations.

Last.fm has been available for Android users through a 3rd party app, but this marks the entry of the service’s official app into the mix.  Test it out and let us know what you think!

  1. I typed in 4 artist (R&B) legends and nothing was found.

I see they only cater to certain genres or artist...

    Not Cool!
  2. Has anyone tried this app over a GPRS connection? It has been buffering for over 10 minutes and still nothing. To put this in perspective, I am able to use Imeem almost immediately over GPRS as well as StreamFurious, although that one can take up to 2-3 minutes to connect.
  3. I'm using wifi right now and it's smooth...

Hmmm... I only tried the new app for a hot minute so can't comment on the client's ability to find stuff and stream it, but LastFM proper has a GREAT selection of soul, funk, R&B, etc. Go to the main LastFM site and try the search again, you will be surprised. BTW, what did you serch for?
  5. yeah, it's smooth for me over wifi too... but my gym i go to does not have open wifi... so i'm stuck with GPRS!
  6. works great over 3g ! and .... it found all the artists i put in , even the obscure ones

I tried Minnie Riperton, Angela Bofill even Chante Moore

I mean it's not bad at all, I found some old House Vocals...

So I'm not totally disappointed, I was just upset my 3 favorite ladies couldn't be founded.

Nope I know my artist quite well...

Edit: Minnie Riperton finally popped up, I'm even more satisfied now
  9. Seems to work fantastic for me, even streams perfectly over Edge without any pauses for buffering.
  10. is there a massive speed difference between gprs and edge?

There's certainly plenty to stream from those three, DaYuMu6ft7:

    http://www.last.fm/music/Minnie+Riperton

    http://www.last.fm/music/Angela+Bofill

    http://www.last.fm/music/Chant%C3%A9+Moore

One mistake I made was to type in a tag into the artist tab (and an artist into the tag tab).
  12. Best news I've had all day. Can't wait to try this app out

    Thanks "Afront"!

    I found my mistake...

    I'm one happy camper

I wouldn't say "MASSIVE" but eh!

  15. i have been able to use stream furious over GPRS successfully by searching out shoutcast stations that are streaming 28kbps or 56kpbs. Just wish that last.fm offered differing bit rates for slower connections.
  16. Last.fm knocks imeem into a ****ed hat - a head-to-head of the two official Android apps for these will surely prove this.

I'm particularly impressed with the background streaming of this app: on average, I'm getting about a 5 second gap between songs (walking home, on 3G) which I reckon is pretty impressive.

No probs, actually I just realized this was probably caused by a wee bug in the app:

    1. 1. Select "Start a New Station"
    2. 2. Select say the Tag or User tab
    3. 3. Open the keyboard
    4. -> App reverts to the Artist tab.
  18. Has a lot of potential, but it doesn't stream well in the background. If i run last.fm and then fire up the browser, last.fm closes.

I love the fact that imeem lets me do other stuff while it plays in the background. Last.fm needs to support that in a stable fashion.

I guess it depends, because on wifi I pulled up both the Stock & Steel browser with no problem
  20. The imeem app + LastFM music library / features + Pandora's music selection algorhythm = perfection

    Co Signs!!!!!!!!!!

(listening to "New Birth" as I type)
  22. How does this one compare to Stream Furious? Stream Furious is really awesome. Its connected to Shoutcast.com

This is better because it plays music you like rather than just radio stations... but like I have been saying, it doesn't work at all over GPRS connection! Otherwise it is quite awesome.
  24. Alastfm player is good too
  25. The app works perfectly. I am streaming my library right now over WiFi. I couldn't tell a difference between 3G and WiFi for this app. I hope it will work fine over EDGE as well when I need it to.

Maybe it is finally time for me to get that brick of a battery...

Tough call for me... I use stream furious a lot, but I wish it had an easier way to import more Shoutcast streams without going to the web (unless I'm missing something). LastFM is like becoming the radio station. Awesome!
  27. Its still a bit too unstable for me. Stops a lot for no reason..
  28. I believe the app is great.
I just downloaded it and I love it so far.

  29. They need to allow it to play in the background
It shuts off when u back out and do other thingz

I was out travelling tonight and got into an EDGE connection and it streamed perfectly... but forget about it over GPRS! On GPRS it takes 10 minutes to get started and stops before the first song finishes! *SIGH* T-mobile why do you hate me... no EDGE?

GUI is awesome ans when it plays, the sound quality is good, but it gives me error messages and gets into an endless buffering, which requires to shutoff the phone, too much to the point it is useless.
  32. Does anyone know why it requires access to contacts. I'm excited about this application, but not if it is going to harvest all my contacts!

This is for the "Email this song to a friend" feature (Menu > Share, select from contacts in your address book or Last.fm friends). Nothing nefarious!
  34. Here's a review based on extensive testing on 3g, wifi and edge. This is acomparison between lastfm and imeem.

Lastfmhas much bettter features like the ability to see the songs tag and look for other radio stations. Its much better at finding the music I like. The problem? Performance. There is too much buffering with lag time betwwen songs of 5 sec or more. Do not even try it on edge.

Imeem, though it lacks the same seaarch power, has much better performance. Ihave little lag time between songs. One reason I thinkk imeem kicks ass is that it progressively downloads the song while lastfm is purely streaming. You lose your connection for a split second and lastf stops and has to buffer again. Imeem keeps playing your song.

Until lastfm progressively downloads songs, imeem is going to win on performance alone.
  35. It works great for me over 3G. I am very impressed with the app as well as its selection of music. It synced seamlessly with the settings I put into their website. I have used imeem for a while, but I think I will be switching to Last.fm.
  36. The Last.fm app been updated already to version 1.0.1:

    * Crash fixes
    * Most activity states are saved when changing orientation and changing tasks
    * Better radio error handling
    * Better resilience when playing in the background
    * Adjust music volume at all times on the radio player activity
    * Fade the music back in after receiving a call
    * Some UI tweaks

One thing I can't get working is the "Play My Playlists" stream - it's apparently available to all Last.fm subscribers, but I can't see it. Anyone else tried this?

It's not showing up for either, just the list I made from using the app
  38. I used to use Last.fm before I had a G1. Then I tried the app and it was HORRIBLE over Edge. I started using imeem because of how well it worked over edge and have been using that for a couple of months. Well, yesterday I read that last.fm will be integrated into the xbox 360 in the fall.

I want to know from any users of the last.fm app if the app has improved on its buffering issues. also, I believe imeem kept downloading the song in the background so that it wouldn't stop when the signal was weak. DOes last.fm do this now?

Most of the information i found by searching is pretty old. If you're wondering why i dont just download and try it myself, its because i'm just having SUPER SLOW edge today and even my imeem is running slow....so i can't really compare right now. Also, I want to hear from any last.fm app users that have edge.

Any info would be much appreciated!

It's about the same as it was 2 months ago. Even on 3g it's too slow for me. They need to work on compressing their songs down to decrease buffer, and to also buffer in the background to fix the song switching issue.
  40. thanks for the info, yeah...it looks like its unusable over edge
